“Nice hotel - but.......”

I was looking forward to revisiting Jersey after a 50 year gap. The hotel seemed pleasant enough on arrival with an extremely efficient and friendly receptionist. We were given a twin bedded room with a side view of sea which, on first inspection seemed quite adequate. On closer inspection some of the decor, especially the bathroom was a little tired. We were booked for b&b, hoping to go out to local pubs etc for dinner, but this was not possible because of location. Although on main bus route, as a somewhat older couple, we did not want to be treking round in dark and there was nowhere within a reasonable walking distance and very narrow paths on main road would have made this difficult. However we were very satisfied with the standard of food in the main dining room! Service was excellent and the food was freshly cooked and always hot. Therefore not a problem except we prefer to eat at different locations.
Main problem came at night! We were probably unfortunate to have one of the only 'young' couples in the room above us and nothing was left to the imagination. Squeaky floorboards and obviously very thin walls and ceilings left me with my hands over my ears! The hotel definitely needs to address the issue of soundproofing! Added to this every time the shower was used we were woken with a start! Very noisy plumbing! Our short break was spoilt by this noise. Minibus service offered by hotel did not turn up for return journey on 2 occasions.
On positive side the staff were very friendly and helpful. Dining room well run and food excellent.

Room Tip: Ask for top floor!

“Disappointing standard of accommodation”

I'm afraid I have to agree with JEMMidland... The photographs of the rooms on the website - which give the impression of clean, contemporary accommodation - bear absolutely no resemblance the reality. I got the impression only very few of the rooms in this hotel had been refurbished, with the remaining rooms still needing urgent attention.
However, I have no complaints about the staff and we did get a refund, when asked, for some of the nights that we weren't going to be there because we really did not want to stay for the full 5 nights that we have booked and paid for.
So yes, we were dealt with professionally but we will not come back.

Room Tip: Ask for a refurbished room.

“Very Good Overall”

Just got back from a long weekend in Jersey, staying at the Shakespear. Staff very polite and helpful, hotel room was basic and nice and clean with a good flat screen TV to watch at night before hitting the sack. Room was a little warm as it was over the kitchen, but fine really. Food - we were half-board and also did a couple of lunches too, where the quality of the food alternated between good and very good. The waiter service would be considered as very good. No issues there at all. Well done !.

Jersey - a very busy place in respect of traffic with the roads difficult to walk as there are few pavements, and many buses, cars, vans, huge 4x4's, small coaches, motorbikes and cyclists constantly on the roads. More built up than we imagined it to be. People in general were friendly, with most cafe owners helpful. Bus drivers - most were fine but a couple were not so helpful, but the frequency of buses is good with a minimum charge of 1.20 and a max charge of 1.70. If you do the rounds, you will change frequently, but pay again each time you change. You can get a pass for about £6 ish I am told. Forget car hire, the roads are just too busy. Sometimes it seems that the number of vehicles must exceed the number of people who live on the island. Over all, we had a good break, and would stay at the hotel again without hesitation. Arranged through Jersey Travel, who were ok. Did not see anyone from the agency when our flight arrived late at the airport from Manchester, but we waited for half an hour and our transfers turned up, even though they were dealing with backlog due to airport closure the prev day due to Fog, and lots of delays.

Stayed 1st and 2nd September 2011 , my Aunt and i stayed here with my 97 year old Nan.
ideal accommodation for our needs , room 24 , twin bed sea view room with adjoining single room . View across St Clements Bay was stunning. There was a lift up to the 1st floor and en suite in both rooms. We were well attended to by Anna on reception and throughly enjoyed our stay

Room Tip: Deal with Anna

“Excellent, well located, best value hotel.”

My wife & I stayed here on HB basis for 5 nights( wanted a long-weekend break from work). We hired a car from the airport but this is not really necessary since the bus passes frequently from the front of the hotel. OK.. not the best beach immediately in front of the hotel, but who comes to Jersey for the beaches? If I want these I go much further south. There is an excellent beach just a few bus stops going East towards Gorey. The standard of food and table service is the excellent feature of this hotel. Nick, who served our table ( comes from Romania) is a first class, attentive waiter as is all the staff in the hotel. We had one of the standard rooms, but on reflection, having viewed the superior rooms would have upgraded. Some poor reports on noise transmitted from other rooms, but we did not encounter much of this to the extent that it bothered. I would highly recommend it for a short break in a well positioned hotel on the southern most point in Jersey. Very clean,, well maintained.

Room Tip: Recommend superior rooms which have recently been refurbished.
