“A pleasant surprise”

I booked this hotel for accommodation for a pilgrimage as the other hotel was fully booked. I was a bit apprehensive as the general standard in Knock, either for staying or eating out, is not great. I was pleasantly surprised by this hotel.
The decor is a bit dated and shabby in places but if you can overlook that you'll see a clean, warm and comfortable place to stay. We stayed one night and for 89 euros each we had dinner, bed and breakfast. The dinner was lovely, very tasty and lots of veg! The breakfast was a bit basic, no fresh fruit or rolls/croissants but was satisfactory.
There is a lift but it isn't easily accessible to all rooms, if you have mobility problems ask for a room beside the lift, there are quite a few stairs.
I didn't use the steam room/jacuzzi etc so can't comment on that.
The most impressive aspect of this hotel is the staff. I had to change our booking twice and it was no problem. They are friendly, very helpful and are a big asset to the hotel. I hope the owners recognise this!
All in all it was a great stay, we all slept well as the road beside us seemed quiet and we will be back!

  • Liked — The friendly staff who were so helpful and the comfortable rooms
  • Disliked — The decor, our wallpaper was a bit mad.

“Awful hotel”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 July 2007

The hotel was extremely disappointing - it is very much a case of false advertising for this hotel. This is a very lengthy review of the hotel but i feel it definitely needs to highlighted.
The hotel website boasts a range of spa treatments, gym, sauna, steam room, jacuzzi etc. How ever the reality is far from this. When we arrived we read that the gym was "closed due to refurbishment". The gym is a room the size of a bathroom with 2 bikes and 2 treadmillls. There were no refurbishments, it is just not open most likely due to lack of staff. No sign of steam room or other facilities open. According to the staff at reception desk the"spa" is run by a lady who works parttime and may or may not turn up at weekends(no one knew when she would be there). I left my number for someone to contact me about the "spa" - not surprisingly no one returned my call. Therefore no spa bookings were possible. The fact that there were lots of colourful adverts placed around the hotel for various spa treatments made it even more frustrating.
Staff were v rude & unhelpful esp at breakfast. All the tables were full of dirty delf, cutlery etc from earlier use. We told staff this but they ignored it and we were forced to clear a table to sit at ourselves (along with other guests).
We were woken at 2am by guests knocking& trying to get back into the hotel-the porter didn't come for 20-30 mins.I dressed and went downstairs and called the porter. He insisted they had only arrived and that I had imagined it and to go back to bed!
The decor of the hotel is old and in good need of refurbishment. Some stuff needed to be repaired e.g. cracked tiles in bathroom, shower doors in the bathroom wouldn't close properly so the bathroom got soaked when the shower was in use, and the lamp in the bedroom had no bulb. The bed and pillows were rock hard.
On a more positive note the "award winning restaurant" provided nice standard meals with big portions. It was a pity the waitress dragged the dirty ripped rag she was using to hold hot plates right through my food!
Will never ever go there again!

  • Liked — Leaving / nothing
  • Disliked — The attitude of the staff in particular to older or disabled guests

My friend and i stayed at the Belmont in a twin room facing the car park at the back of the hotel. It was very clean and the staff were very nice. It has a jaccuzzi and gym. The food was excellent. We were there Mon-Fri Easter week and there was football on in the bar most nights and the two nights entertainment we got was a kareoke which didnt start till after the football and a singer the night before we left which also didnt start till quite late. The entertainment was only on for just over an hour. Dont know if this was the norm or because of the football. Knock is a lovely place but very quiet with nothing much to do. Most people on holiday in Knock are there to see the Shrine. Nice place if your are looking for a very very quiet break.

  • Liked — cleanliness,food and staff.
  • Disliked — lack of entertainment
