“poor management”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 September 2011

Booked this morning and was told there were very few staying. Paid E35 for a private room as when I arrived there were quite a number of excited teens and twenties around, so thought I would be better off alone, One group had some members who made ongoing noise which meant sleep was impossible, At 1230am the fire alarm went off. I went to look for night staff to see if I could sleep somewhere quieter as when I booked had told me the place was fariyl empty. At that point he was doing most of the banging on doors and shouting as he was trying to find out the source of the alarm. He would not give me another room although I told him the alternative was a 3 hour drive home. When I went downstairs to leave and collect my refund, he started to verbally attack me saying he had been trying to make it quiet. Got home very unimpressed at 4am. What a wasted trip..and so unnecessary- groups of youngsters will be noisy, and at times some will act out. But in a big hostel, its not hard to give them an area away from everyone else. Being bad tempered and taking it out on paying guests will not garner repeat business and I will not be visiting such a badly run hostel -in such a beautiful area -again.
Mixed cleanliness- bathroom was spotless while room had very dirty carpet and chair.

Room Tip: if you cna handle the noise when there is a group then a dorm is good value. AT E35 for a private r...

“Terrible”

Staff was extremely rude, they came into our room at 2 in the morning without any sort of permission or warning and started giving out to us for talking quietly. The beds were broken and uncomfortable. None of the computers worked. The food was scarce and almost inedible. Almost ruined our whole school trip. Wouldn't advise any group to stay here

Room Tip: Don't stay here.

“Great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 April 2011

Great location next to the cemetary and a couple of metres from walking paths suitable for all sorts of hikers. Staff ready to help. Travellers' kitchen OK, if you choose to pay for breafast choose Irish breakfast.

“A wonderful experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 September 2010

My husband and I decided to bring our 2 young sons 9 and 5 for their first proper trek and because of many many childhood memories of daytrips to Glendalough, we chose there as our destination. I hadn't been there for maybe 20 years. A friend recommended we stay at this hostel, and because of the many nice things she had to say about it, we decided to make it an overnighter instead of a daytrip.
And are we glad! My only impression of hostels in general prior to this was reports I received from friends during my teenage years which promptly made me work very hard so I could afford to avoid them at all costs. So not knowing what to expect only that maybe things had improved, we set off with newly acquired trekking gear and a box full of easily prepared food.
Were we in for a treat! The hostel itself is set in a wonderful location, only a few minutes up the road from the visitor centre in Glendalough. The place was clean and homey. The family room we had booked was very roomy, even for our boisterous duo, with quite a large ensuite, very comfy beds with pristine linen and enough storage for our short stay. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The lady at reception made us aware that there was a party of 40 intending cooking in the self catering kitchen at 7 so we could either avoid it at this time, or use their own kitchen. I felt sure I'd have to take her up on that offer, but to our delight the large and very well kitted (if you are into higgledy piggledy) kitchen adequately accommodated not only them and us, but a few others too!
The nearest nightlife is a dark (bring a torch) but very short walk away, a small hotel with a lively bar, and a quieter more loungy area if you are with youngsters.
I'm so glad we threw caution to the wind and stayed here. It has opened a whole new way of doing things for us, and I'm about to book my next hostel trip for a few weeks time. I would highly recommend this hostel if you are travelling with small kids.
