“Merry woman!”

This was the first hotel I stayed in on my trip around the burren on my bike. I decided to do a mix of hotels for a treat, B&Bs to save money and "whatever" where there was no other option.

All I hoped was that the hotels I stayed in would put the treat, rather than the threat, in treat.

I arrived in at 7 in the evening, hot, sweaty and lugging a bike full of panniers, with a fair amount of the sand and mud of the backroads from Galway to Kinvarra on my bike. I did not look like the poster child for the typical hotel advert.

The receptionist didn't even blink.

My bike was stashed safely inside, I was handed a key, asked if there was anything else I needed and told not to turn the hot tap the full way around as the water coming out of the faucet would be scalding.

The room was lovely, simply and pleasingly decorated, a typical Irish low-down bath in an immaculate bathroom, a mega-comfy king sized bed and everything scrubbed until it shined.

Now, for the ultimate hotel test. I have done this in hotels all over the world and most, even the most expensive, fail really badly. I love yoga and try to get in at least 40 mins every day. To do this, I shove the bed into the corner of the room and usually I find some pretty spectacular horrors in the space it vacates. Usually, I find dead *somethings*, rubber *somethings*, bits of paper, bits of pen, broken glass and more than once stuck-together hankies (lovely!) Not so in the Merriman, all I found was an immaculate carpet with 1 tacking pin, which in fairness I would not have spotted but for my eternal fear of missing something I would go on to step on.

I had dinner in the bar that evening which did have veggie meals other than the toasted cheese sandwich which has been my only option in some hostelries in Ireland. I has the pasta and pesto and a glass of wine. The table service was excellent and attentive.

Later on, after meeting up with friends, I called into the lounge for one before bed and although there was a full bar listening to the pub band, I found an alcove where I could have a quiet read of my book whilst still being an observer of all the fun going on, on the floor.

I completely recommend the merriman for anyone looking for a clean comfortable hotel in a lovely location with all the trademarks of a family hotel and none of the uniformity of a chain.

Fantastic place!

“Nice Hotel, excellent and friendly staff”

The Merriman Hotel is the only actual hotel in Kinvara. Built into the ruins of two older building, it fits in perfectly with the town, and has a beautiful thatched roof. Rooms are nothing fancy, but clean and comfortable.

The restaurant is above average for a hotel but I only ate their once as there are many other dining places I tried in Kinvara. The bar area was quite popular and seems to attract a lot of local people as well as guests. It also has free wi-fi.

But the real charm of this hotel is the staff. They are genuinely friendly and will go out of their way to help you. One example of this astounded me.

I was having lunch in the bar, working on my computer. After about an hour, finished up, paid the bill, got in my car and drove off. Just as I was ready to turn onto the main road, I see the bartender running frantically after me. I had left behind a small piece of paper at the bar. When the bartender noticed, she ran out after me to the parking lot but I had already pulled away. She continued to run after me and caught up just before i got on the main road. I don't know of too many hotels that would go to such lengths for a customer. I thanked her profusely as that piece of paper contained an important address I would need later that day, but she acted like it was no big deal on her part.

I will be returning here my next vist to the beautiful town of Kinvara.

Very good central location and they allowed me to check in early afternoon. Room was spotlessly clean and bright. In the centre of Kinvara so everything was within walking distance. Some lovely reastaurants and littel shops. Because it was Sunday the hotel restaurant wasn't open but there was a good menu selection in the bar. Staff were all very pleasant and I wasnt rushed out of my rooom the following day a totally relaxing experience.

“there was a free shuttle bus from the village to the galway races which was very useful.”

Lovely location for a hotel close to nice pubs & a decent restaurant down on the harbour. Lovely comfortable room with tea & coffee making facilities.

They advertise a seafood restaurant but it looked really dismal no menus on display & when we went down there was no one in it so we chose to eat elsewhere. I think they need to revamp the restaurant as they are obviuosly losing custom from not having it up to scratch.

Room Tip: The food was good
