“Country House Comfort - stay here and feel at home.”

The first thing about Ballynahinch Castle, is that it is a couple of kilometres from the nearest main road and so is very quiet. it is also set in beautiful woodlands with manicured gardens, shrubberies, by a rushing river with great walks. It is very easy to just relax and forget that the there are other places to see in lovely Connemara. The rooms are very comfortable, four-poster beds in some, staff are absolutely lovely, most seem to have been here for years, food is excellent without being too fussy. Try the seafood plate in the bar for a real taste of freshness (enough for two and good value). The bar is the hub of the hotel and everyone wanders in there at some stage. Prices are similar to local bars, so no worry about what the pint costs. Impromptu singing sessions are likely to happen, and you never know who you might meet. Ballynahinch is well worth the drive to Connemara, you won't want to leave.

Room Tip: The riverside room have great views. Take time to look at the photographs and painting so the wall...

“I just love this place! No 1 in Ireland!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

This is one very special place! From the moment you arrive you are feel made so welcome it's impossible not to relax. The roads around the immediate vicinity are so quiet (as they don't really go anywhere!) that you can walk around for hours without seeing a car, and that's if you decide to leave the grounds! The ambiance of the Castle is created using a very special formula which is the skill of Patrick and his team - it's impossible not to relax here. From elegant lounges with big log fires and beautiful gardens not to mention your room (we were lucky enough to stay in a suite overlooking the famous salmon river) you're sure to find a space just for you. Breakfast is a treat and dinner in either the "pub" or diningroom is sure to please with plenty of choice for all tastes. We were fortunate to have musicians playing in the bar on Saturday night and together with a few pints of creamy Guinness made for a great nights sleep in our four poster bed! You have to experience this hotel to truly appreciate it's a special place with history all around you!
All this, and not a fishing rod or shotgun put to use all weekend! (we did manage to walk the legs off Patrick's dog before we left though!)

“Our favourite place to stay!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 January 2012

Our love affair with Ballynahinch began a long time ago. We'd booked there for our first trip to Ireland and unfortunately there was a mix-up with the first night of our stay. As a result, our booking for that night was changed to another country house hotel in the area. That one was beautiful and our upgraded room was stunning but the atmosphere was really uncomfortable - we felt we had to whisper all the time in the restaurant. The next day we moved to Ballynahinch and it couldn't have been more perfect. A roaring fire, wellington boots and friendly dogs. Lots of laughter, plenty of comfy places to sit in fat armchairs and staff who can't do enough to make you feel at home.
We've stayed in a wide range of rooms over the years and never had a bad one and oh...goodness...the food...! The most wonderful breakfasts and brilliant 'pub' food by the fire in the tavern bar. Do try the restaurant at least once, though, admittedly it is expensive but you won't regret it as the food is memorable and delicious. They can also cater for veggies without a problem.
Every other hotelier should spend a weekend here, finding out how to do things properly. OK, they've got a stunning building and a breathtaking setting but what makes it really special is the desire to provide the best, to look after people and to do so in a friendly, warm way without stuffy formality.

“A wonderful place for a winter break”

We love this place in the winter. Superb log fires, lovely views from bedroom, good walks and great food. There's always a genuine welcome and there are really good deals in wintertime. Dinner was excellent and a wide selection of good wines. We needed to check out a little later than standard but this was no problem.
