“I felt like I was at the Bates Motel”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 September 2009

I would not recommend this place. The lobby was very dimly lit and when I got to my room it was dingy and dirty and I felt like I step back into the 1970's. The only update to my room was the keyless door entry. I slept with the lights on and was hoping the roaches would not come out with the light on!!

“Terrible! Horrible! Filthy! Falling Apart! Shady Management!! FALLING APART! SHADY MANAGEMENT!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 March 2009

On Saturday, March 7, 2009, I paid for two nights at the Scottish Inn Airport with the expectation of spending two nights at the motel. WHAT A MISTAKE! I requested a non-smoking room. However, the room I received reeked of smoke and there was a cigarette butt in the trash can. The room was filthy and looked like it was falling apart--paint bubbled, wallpaper peeling off the wall, ceiling tile broken and water stains. The tile was broken and coming off the floor. The shower was covered in mildew. The shower changed from extreme hot to extreme cold while I was in the shower. The toilet did not work. The sink leaked. The walls were so thin, I could hear the neighbors' conversation as if they were in the same room...I could go on and on....

Management was VERY shady. After the first TERRIBLE night, I spoke with the lady (name unknown) in the office at approximately 7:00 or 8:00 am the next morning. I told her that due to the conditions of the room, I would not be staying a second night, and I requested a refund for the second night. After explaining to the employee why I would not be staying, she called her “manager”, who was “out” at the time. I told him the problems I had experienced and told him as well that I would not be staying the second night and that I wanted the second night’s charge refunded to my account. He told me that it would not be a problem to refund the charge and that he would take care of it when he got into the office. Well, nearly a month later...no refund. I called back to speak with the manager about the refund. He was "out of town." I tried to get the woman's name and she hung up on me! Needless to say, I don't think they intend to give me back my money. I have disputed the account with my credit card company. We'll see how that goes...

To be honest, I think the Bates motel would have been a safer and better place to stay than this horrible dump! I would recommend sleeping in the car if this motel were the only lodging option.

“Deplorable! Horrible! Disgusting! BEWARE!”

Have you ever fantasized about staying at 'The Bates Motel' or the motel from the movie 'VACANCY' where they kill the guests? The Scottish Inn on Alcoa Highway in Knoxville Tennessee is for you! This place is a 100% fail!

I was lured in by the $40 per night price tag combined with the proximity to UT Med Center where my wife was healing from surgery.

Keep in mind, I wasn't expecting MUCH but I certainly wasn't expcting what I encountered at the Knoxville Scottish Inn. From the outside, it looks ALRIGHT...an older, highway side motel. The first hint of trouble is the boarded up restaurant adjacent to the motel but it was late and I was in dire need of sleep.

I also should have been forewarned when they asked that I pay upfront...it has been my experience that this is usually a bad sign in motels/hotels...but once again...I was exhausted and looking for nothing more than a clean bed to rest my head. I prepaid for two nights and entered room 1408...er....I mean 122.

Let's see.....where, EXACTLY, do I start?

The first thing I noticed was that there was a water logged bible laying on the dresser opened to the book of Proverbs. That set things off appropriatley. Next, as I began to lay my bags down on one of the double beds, I noticed that there was a dark congealed mass stuck to the bed spread. Upon closer inspection, this revealed itself to be dried feces. Animal or human I know not. I opted for the second bed and after checking the bed spread and sheets, set my bags on that one.

The bathroom shower stall was caked with black dirt and goo in the tracks and there was no shower head in the shower. Yes...you read that right....the water shot directly out of a metal tube in the wall like a water hose. The bathtub didn't drain either, so after you were done with your hose shower, you were standing in three feet of water.

What else? Oh yes!!!! There was an access way to the other OCCUPIED room next door. This is not that unusual...each room has a locking door on their end right? Except, the door on my side HAD NO LOCK. That's right...the people in the other room could open the door on their end and simply walk into mine should they choose.

And to top it all off....the TV remote control had no batteries. The batteries weren't dead....there were no batteries.

I slept fitfully and on top of the bed linens and left as soon as I woke up the next morning. After a few hours of thought, I determined I would not return to the Scottish Inn for my second night. When I tried to get a refund charged back onto my credit card, the "manager" informed me that I had missed checkout and he wouldn't give me back my money. I chose that opportunity to inform him everything that was wrong with his motel. He then proceeded to ARGUE with me about the condition of the room. I notice from another review here that other people have had problems with the management being generally shady.

DO NOT STAY HERE! DO NOT STAY HERE! DO NOT STAY HERE!

“A place to sleep”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 December 2007

The description online is a bit misleading. For starts...it MAY be the closest MOTEL to the airport I'm not sure but it is most definitely NOT the closest hotel. 30 years ago maybe. I wasted a half tank of gas trying to find it. It's 10-15 miles from the airport. There is no lounge or restaurant any more and if there is any exercise equipment I'm not sure where it would be located. While the room appeared clean and the bed was fairly comfy it could definitely use some work. Be sure and start your shower before you actually get in because the water starts out looking like tang. After that...the water pressure is awesome. Lighting was horrible, the room had no clock and the man working the desk seemed truly baffled that I had made a reservation...even when he was holding the printed itinerary. The maid doesn't knock before entering so keep that chain on ;) All in all....a clean enough room at a cheap price if you're just looking for somewhere to sleep.

“Warning! Read before you reserve a room at this hotel”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 September 2007

On 17 May 2007 I made reservations for 3 rooms at the Scottish Inn Knoxville Airport (Alcoa Hwy) for 24 Aug 2007. On 25 June 2007 I canceled all 3 rooms on line. I also called the hotel 5 different times before I was able to speak to the manager (who was always out). When I finally spoke with the manager (who can barely speak English) he assured me the rooms were canceled. I also called the sales rep at Bookroomsnow.com and the lady there assured me all 3 reservations were canceled and she would notify the hotel. I even received an email confirming my cancelation. However I was still charged for 1 room ($117.16) on my charge card (24 Aug 07). Should be a simple fix right? After all I have a cancelation confirmation number? No way after calling (3 times) this morning I spoke to the same person who identified herself as "only the house keeper" and stated the manager was "out". Finally on the 4th try I was able to speak with the manager. I explained my situation to him and immediately he acted like there was nothing he could do. He gave a bunch of lame excuses and told me to take it up with my credit card company.

Think twice before you reserve a room from this hotel.
