“Worst Marriott Experience By Far”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 March 2011

I'm a Marriott Gold Rewards member so needless to say, I've stayed at a lot of Marriotts all over the country. This one was by far the worst. The staff was friendly but besides that, everything else was horrible. Our first room wreaked of smoke so they promptly changed us, no problems, but the second room was disgusting. Mold on the shower curtain, stains on the carpet, and what appeared to be a blood stain on the curtains and in the tub. We didn't bother switching at that point, just stayed there. The hotel itself needs a face lift, it's dark and damp. Not welcoming at all. I was especially annoyed after returning to the room on the second day in the afternoon to find out that it had never been cleaned. When I called the front desk, they sent a housekeeper up only to tell me that she gets off work in 10 minutes (it was 3pm) and didn't have time to clean our room. I used my Marriott points for this stay and really feel like I wasted them. We were in town for a wedding and the rest of our family stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn down the road. I was jealous of their hotel, sooo much nicer and it was less expensive.

“Bugs”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 January 2011

The hotel offered us a late arrival which perfect for our travel. Upon arriving we were greeted by friendly staff that got us checked in quickly. After getting to our room - barely getting to the room that is - the light from us opening the door caused some not so lovely bugs to scurry accross the floor. The night manager assured us that this had never happened to them before but we opted not to stay there anyway. So at 3am Knoxville time, we were forced to find another hotel.

“Not the Best Courtyard To Stay At!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 July 2010

Stayed there as our overnight stop on our way home from Florida to Ohio. Called a head during the drive to make the reservations. Was a busy travel weekend for many apparently and they were mostly full- not their fault. But I did call the local desk myself to ask a couple of questions. No handicap accessible rooms were left, so I wanted to findout exactly what was left. The girl that answered the phone was curt, at best. She seemed to have an attitude that since they were almost sold out for the night, she didn't need to be talking to me. I was on the phone maybe 3 minutes, seems like she could've answered my questions in a friendly manner.

We settled on a king bed room, I was travelling with my daughter. Would've preferred 2 beds, but again, not their fault. The room was SMALL and crammed with a desk/chair, king bed, sofa that pulled out another bed, a piece of furniture with TV on top. There was barely room to walk around. I slept on the left side of the king bed and had about 12" of room between the bed and the wall to walk, when I got to the foot of the bed, I had to contend with about 8" of room between the end of the bed and the sofa. Had the sofa bed been pulled out, I could not have gotten out of the bed at all unless I crawled over the other person sleeping in the bed. So the room was very small and overly furnished.

There was whirlpool tub, which I could've cared less about, and the lady forgot to mention when I made the reservations that the shower was located inside the tub, not a separate stand-alone shower unit. Therefore I was unable to shower the next morning as the sides of the whirlpool tub were quite high and I have limited mobility.

The vent cover on the a/c unit that directs the air into the room instead of under the curtains was not securely fastened and knocked about noisily until we devised a system of putting various personal belongings (my heavy purse, for one) on top of it so it would quit knocking. In a way the knocking would've helped as the hotel backs up onto a very busy stretch of I-40/I-75 and the traffic noise was unbelievable all night long.

No included breakfast and for the price to stay, that is a rip off.

Thank you for visiting our Courtyard by Marriott and for providing valuable feedback and comments.

The service you experienced when calling in to make your reservation is very unlike our staff and not up to the high standards that we set at Courtyard by Marriott. Our Front Desk Team prides themselves in their friendliness, and is currently ranked in the Top 50 of the 792 Courtyard in the world. I have shared your comments with our front desk associates so we can ensure everyone is striving to maintain our committment to excellence.

We are very sorry that we did not have an accessible room available, and that you were uncomfortable with the room/furniture layout. Our hotel engineering team has been alerted about the vent cover on the a/c unit, and we are making sure to continuously check those as part of our preventative maintenance program for the benefit of future guests.

The Courtyard by Marriott provides a full hot breakfast with several eggs-cooked-to-order options, speciality omelettes & burritos, fresh cut fruit, and belgium waffles in addition to all of the regular breakfast offerings at other hotels. Due to the extra offerings and more personalized service, the Courtyard Brand does not include breakfast with our room rate.

I hope you will allow us an opportunity to regain your confidence should your travels bring you through Knoxville in the future. Please contact me directly and I will personally ensure you receive the highest level of service and accommodations we pride ourselves in providing.

Sincerely,

Amy Green

“location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2010

Went through Knoxville on our way to Florida for the winter. We had booked ahead for our trip. Hotel was easy to locate off the expressway. We think the building was only afew years old, and keep very nice, clean lobby and our room was nice & clean. Front desk was helpful and answered all our questions. We were located near "old town" Knoxville and not far ( 3 miles ) from large shopping area-Turkey Creek. My wife said she could hear traffic from highway, I couldn't. If this would be a problem ask for room towards the back of building.

“Smokey smell”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 January 2010

We stayed one night at this Marriott on our drive from Orlando back to Toronto, CDA. We originally did not know where to stay, but choose Marriott from the GPS because Marriott is a non smoking chain and that is very important to us with 2 small kids. We checked in at 10:30pm and found the rate to be reasonable at $89.00. But we were really suprised to be greeted with a very strong cigarate smoke smell when we entered the room. (which ironically had a non smoking symbol on the door). The room itself was OK, big and roomy. But the bathroom stinked with cigarate smell, even my husband who normally can tolerate anything contemplated on changing rooms. He complained to the night manager and was told " We have been a non smoking facility for 3 years, if there is a problem, we will alert housekeeping" and did not offer any change of room. I think anyone who walk into that room can notice the smell and certainly housekeeping should not need any further alerting. We thougth we only stayed for night and did not bother to complain anymore. But we tried to avoid the bathroom and the girls and I use face towel instead of bath towel after the shower because the towels were all smelly. We are very disappointed by Marriott since this is a chain which prided itself as a non smoking chain, but I think in the end the housekeeping standard may be worse than a chain that allows smoking like the Hilton. Also, the breakfast was not included with the price, which is unusual for that location
