“A bit better than average Best Western”

We stayed several days in the charming little town of Hill City, South Dakotal. Booked into the Best Western's Golden Spike Motel. We were traveling at the end of the season to avoid crowds. The Spike was a bit above the average BW. Even if we were booked into their "overflow" building when the main motel was far from full. It turned out to be a quiet stay and I really enjoyed their pool. The complimentary breakfast was good and not the usual "rush" of most of the BW's This was a good value. If you head to the Black Hills, be sure to see Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse, the Badlands and be comfortable at the GS Inn.

Room Tip: Maybe not a bad idea to be booked into the "overflow" building after all. It is where the...

“Nice stay, great location”

We stayed in one of the suite rooms with two "rooms" and two baths, two double beds and a sleeper sofa and a small kitchenette. It was my parents and my family (4 adults-2 kids) and we were all very comfortable. There is an indoor/outdoor pool and an exercise room that we used often. All facilities and rooms were clean and were well maintained. JUST BE AWARE AS OTHERS HAVE SAID...there was no comp breakfast. You did get a complimentary free cup of coffee from the Seattle's Best coffee bar in the lobby, just one though. My mom, who made the reservations, was livid at first when she found out about the like of a comp. breakfast, especially for the price of the room. She swore that the CS rep at the BW reservations led her to believe that there was a comp breakfast...oh well. The good news is that there is a small grocery store really close by, so we just utilized the store and the kitchenette and made our own breakfasts. All in all, we had an enjoyable stay in this beautiful town in the Black Hills

I wanted to bid on a priceline hotel and get the Holiday Inn Express, but got this one instead. It was a lot of money for a older, motel style setup. The staff was nice enough, but the place had an odd feel to it. For example, the gift shop attatched to the lobby, only sells sort of outdated older womens clothing and quilts. The restaurant seemed small and unappealing. I ordered coffee at what seemed like a nice coffee bar which sells Seattle's Best, but the staff was bit cold and the cappacino was cold also with not a bit of coffee flavor ($3.25). The room was old but comfortable and clean. Big negative - no breakfast. For the money we spent here, I would reccomend the Holiday Inn Express next door, or better yet, go over and stay in Keystone which just had a better atmosphere as a town and more places to stay.
Lastly, the workers had me initial something saying I wouldn't have a pet - but as soon as I walked down to my car, a family with 2-3 small dogs walked by and went into a first floor room and we heard barking during our stay.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the newer wing.

Thank you for your review. Knowing what you liked and did not like about your stay helps us improve guest experience for future guests. We do have pet friendly rooms, what you initialed was the unregistered pet policy and the no smoking policy. Complimentary breakfast is on the way in 2012.

Can't remember a more enjoyable hotel stay. Attached restaurant personnel were quite attentive as well.

“Clean, Roomy, Comfy & Well Sited for Touring - No Coffee in the Lobby”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 October 2011

The Title pretty much sums it up. We stayed here so we could tour Mt. Rushmore, Chief Crazy Horse, Hot Springs Mammoth Dig and the Needles in Custer State Park. We had a great couple of days and good nights sleep in our room. The motel is a little older but in good repair with an attentive staff. As with a couple other places we stayed, the internet in the room was spotty but strong in the lobby. One note, there is no coffee available in the lobby; this was not the case anywhere else we stayed during our 3 weeks on the road.

We were not upset with the lack of a free breakfast because we knew that up front yet we were disappointed in the restaurant that was part of the BW. The breakfast specials sounded good & were good the first morning but the second day they were delivered cold after a long wait; I'd look elsewhere for breakfast. There are no fast food places in this town so a McDonald's breakfast is out of the question.

In addition to the above noted attractions, the 1880 Train Co. is located in Downtown Hill City and makes Steam Powered trips a couple of times a day. We didn't have time for this yet we did get some great photos. If you have the time, you may want to do this while you can; there are very few true steam engines still in use.

Room Tip: Ask for a Ground Level room when you book, it is nice to unload at your door and not carry "stu...
