“Charming, warm, prairie gem!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 August 2010

The best part of our De Smet experience was the Prairie House Manor. We stayed in the Forever Blossoms room. It has an adjoining private porch complete with jacuzzi hot tub. The rooms were cozy, tastefully decorated and full of old world charm. The flat screen TV is a nice added touch, as well as the full size murphy bed.

Probably the best feature though is the wonderful couple, Andy and Jenny Todd and their young family who own and operate the B&B. They are gracious hosts who had us feeling we had become quick friends in our brief stay.

I rate this as the best attraction in De Smet. The Ingalls homestead and historical places notwithstanding.

“Best place to stay in De Smet”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 July 2010

This is a very nice Inn owned by Andy and Jenny Todd. It is a nice house with full accomodations, and knowledgable and friendly hosts.

Our room was small but with a full in room bath. There was a TV and fridge in the room.

The home is very warm and welcoming. There is a game room with pool table.

The owners were very knowlegable regarding local Laura Ingalls Wilder sites. Their daughter is in the local L.I.W. pageant.

Breakfast was very good and hearty and filling.

I can recommend this place without reservation.

“Wonderful time”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 July 2010

We loved spending the time in De Smet. Being at this bed and breakfast just added to the experience of the town. Pool passes were helpful for kids. The place is very beautiful, and the Todd family was very nice and helpful. We stayed in the American Medley room in order to have three beds. The third bed turned out to be a pull down from inside a closet. Due to space, we decided not to use it, but we all slept very well. Very clean and nice breakfast included. The Todds have incorporated a number of details from the Laura Ingalls books to add to the experience. We would definitely go back.

“Mixed experience”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 June 2010

UP SIDE: B&B was very clean. Plenty of towels, nice flat-screen TV, mini-fridge very handy. Fun being down the street from Pa Ingalls' last home. Egg breakfast entrees very tasty.

DOWN SIDE; When booking the Rose Garden suite they mentioned we had to go through the smaller bedroom to get to the bathroom. Hmm. The day bed is actually separated by a waist-high wall that only partially screens the toilet and tub. Resign yourself to sleeping in the bathroom. Stuffed French toast entree was mushy. Don't take away used towels on a daily basis. Host family sat in the living room most of the time in front of the large television, occupying all the chairs, and eating their meals off plates right there. If you want to socialize with other guests, you have to go out on the porch. Beware of parking on the street. There's a reason there's eight-inch high curbs and a 4-foot storm drain--a heavy thunderstorm went through and our vehicle nearly got water in the engine. Park out on the main street if there's only rain in the forecast.

“Warm and Welcoming”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 October 2009

My 8 year old daughter and I stayed at The Prairie House on a pilgrimage to Laura Ingalls Wilder sites. It was a great choice. The hosts and their family were all very nice, polite and helpful without being overwhelming. The twin bedroom wasn't big, but the attached private bath was, so there was plenty of room for our stuff. There was a microwave, complete with popcorn, and a little fridge too. The hosts also supplied soap and shampoo and lotion, which was very nice and not expected.Everything was spic and span and very comfortable and cozy. The breakfast-which we chose the night before- was delicious-stuffed french toast, fruit and beverage for me and hot chocolate with whipped cream, fruit, and a made to order omelet for my daughter. We couldn't eat it all.
I would point out that the family are practicing Christians, which might make unmarried or gay couples either uncomfortable or unwelcome. I'm not sure, but I would check at the time of making reservations if you think it might be an issue.
We loved the Prairie House and would like to stay there again. For everything you got, it was a bargain. The hotels in town did NOT look nice, and as a woman travelling alone with a small child, I would have felt nervous, even in South Dakota. I felt very safe and comfortable at the B and B.
