My 8 year old daughter and I stayed at The Prairie House on a pilgrimage to Laura Ingalls Wilder sites. It was a great choice. The hosts and their family were all very nice, polite and helpful without being overwhelming. The twin bedroom wasn't big, but the attached private bath was, so there was plenty of room for our stuff. There was a microwave, complete with popcorn, and a little fridge too. The hosts also supplied soap and shampoo and lotion, which was very nice and not expected.Everything was spic and span and very comfortable and cozy. The breakfast-which we chose the night before- was delicious-stuffed french toast, fruit and beverage for me and hot chocolate with whipped cream, fruit, and a made to order omelet for my daughter. We couldn't eat it all.
I would point out that the family are practicing Christians, which might make unmarried or gay couples either uncomfortable or unwelcome. I'm not sure, but I would check at the time of making reservations if you think it might be an issue.
We loved the Prairie House and would like to stay there again. For everything you got, it was a bargain. The hotels in town did NOT look nice, and as a woman travelling alone with a small child, I would have felt nervous, even in South Dakota. I felt very safe and comfortable at the B and B.
