We (mom and two kids) stayed in the Heritage House Bed and Breakfast as part of our visit to the Laura Ingalls Wilder sites in De Smet. We chose the Heritage House and were glad that we did. It is a beautifully restored former bank building. The rooms were comfortable, and immaculately clean. Do not let the fact that it is located on the "main" street of De Smet dissuade you from staying here. It was INCREDIBLY quiet. The main street of De Smet gets virtually no traffic after about 5:00 in the evening. Very peaceful, and happens to be right across the street from where "Pa" had his store front, and also a hop, skip and a jump from the Lofthus store. Price was more than fair, and (of course) included a nice breakfast the next morning. If we have reason to stay here again, I'd definitely make this my choice again. Way more character than a standard hotel room (and note that the only motels in town ARE located on the highway), and really more of a small inn than a house. Nice, nice place.

My mother, two daughters and myself stayed at Heritage House in July of 2006. It was truly a memorable experience as there were three generations of us - avid Laura Ingalls Wilder fans just ready to experience the history of De Smet. Nothing could have made our trip better than staying in our beautiful suite with the "loft" room. We could see the Loftus store from our big windows with the lace curtains, and slept in sleigh beds with quilts. The period furniture and antique accents throughout the room were perfect. The girls' had nightcaps waiting for them on the pillows and new journals on the nightstand so they could record their experiences. Kim was up early making breakfast in the morning, then in the kitchen again packing us a picnic for lunch, and all the while available to give advise on siteseeing. When we go back we will not even consider staying anywhere else.

Our family of four stayed at the Heritage House Bed and Breakfast in De Smet for two nights in July 2006. It was the highlight of our entire trip to South Dakota. Our suite was wonderful, we had three rooms and a loft, all decorated with period furniture and accessories. Kim, the owner, was very nice and helpful and we had a delicious breakfast each morning.

The Heritage House is located right in downtown De Smet, and it was right across the street from the stores and restaurants in De Smet and an easy walk to the library and other Little House attractions.

Our family had a terrific time in De Smet visiting the Little House homestead and other areas.
