“Dirty, outdated...just plain awful”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 July 2010

We arrived to friendly service and a relatively nice lobby...and then we went to our room. This was our first time staying at a Sleep Inn, so I'm not sure if all these hotels are the same, but the decor and room features were truly outdated and even kind of strange. No lamps (odd fluorescent lights in random places instead)? A VCR? Lots of telltale signs this place hadn't been renovated in many years, including a rusty brass walk-in shower and a sliding bathroom door that we could barely close. But okay, we got a great rate and didn't expect the Four Seasons. However, before we went to sleep that night, we pulled back the covers to see dirty sheets (crusty food, ink stains, you name it), and when we opened the fridge to store our late-night pizza, there were crumbs and other food particles that had been there for who knows how long. We were also consistently uncomfortable...our room was so humid that the bill they slid under our door the next morning was actually wet. The muggy summer weather in Sumter, SC was more comfortable than our room, which really tells you how miserable we were! Anyway, we will not stay at a Sleep Inn again, unless someone really proves us wrong and tells us that we had a very rare experience.

“Good choice!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 July 2009

We arrived during the worst thunderstorm we have ever experienced. The staff were welcoming, helpful and very friendly. The room was clean and comfortable. Breakfast was quite good and offered a good choice of fare. This is a good choice of hotel whether you are passing through or want to discover the historic town of Sumter. We would definitely recommend this hotel.

“Nice change from the I-95 motels”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 August 2007

Given the horrible reviews and some of my own bad experiences with the hotels along the I-95 exits in North Carolina, we decided to try something a bit off the main drag for a change on our way north from Florida. Every U.S. highway in South Carolina seems to converge in Sumter and most seem to take multiple routes through the town. With only the very brief directions from the hotel web site and a state-scale map, we were sure it would be impossible to find. Turns out we didn't get lost, but next time, I'll print a better map of the area. Sumter is surprisingly big, and there's anything you want right near this hotel. We wish we waited until Sumter for dinner instead of grabbing fast food off I-95 a little earlier. No real complaints about the hotel. The front desk was quick and checked us right in. The room was clean and nice. The air conditioning unit didn't seem especially powerful and took a while to cool down the room. It shut itself off more often than I'd expect, but eventually the temperature became comfortable. Wireless Internet was easy and reliable. Breakfast in the morning was your typical selection for a hotel such as this. We'd take the side trip to Sumter again and would at least consider the Sleep Inn if we do.

“Very nice”

Spent one night at Sleep Inn-Sumter. Place was just fine, very typical Sleep Inn digs. Clean and well taken care of. A little hard to find as it is located behind the Comfort Suites with a smallish sign. Plenty of nearby restaurants.
