We were traveling south on the evening of 4/16, when there were terrible storms that caused massive traffic backups all along the east coast. There was absolutely no availability at any hotel in NC or SC. I knew it was a bad sign that this place was the ONLY place with a room for the next 100+ miles, but we had been searching for a hotel room since 11 p.m. and it was already 3 a.m. We just couldn't go any further with 2 little kids traveling with us.
And I knew it was a bad sign when we checked in that the manager said, "The carpet is stained but the room is O.K." Ugh. WRONG. The room was absolutely filthy, there were no clean towels, the tub looked terrifying. I didn't allow my kids to sleep under the covers -- I just had them wrap up in the blankets we brought from home. My husband and I also slept in our clothes on top of the covers.
The only positive is that we had a great incentive to get out of bed and back on the road bright and early. Absolutely the most disgusting hotel I've ever been in. One of the other guys checking in around the same time as us left after seeing the room -- he had teenagers so they were more able to power through -- and the manager tried to charge him $10 just for looking at the room.
