“Wonderful Weekend Getaway”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 September 2011

My wife and I stayed two nights at this most exquisitely beautiful home located immediately across the street from the equally beautiful campus of Winthrop University. We originally booked only a Saturday night stay, but after work Friday when my wife suggested leaving that evening I made a call to Pam, the proprietor, and she was happy to accommodate our excessively late arrival Friday night. My wife had no idea of our accommodations, and was moved to tears at the pleasant surprise upon our entry to Pam's home. Our room, (the Charleston) could not have been better. The only draw back to the stay would be the lingering odor of cigarette smoke downstairs in the common area. There was no trace of the odor however in the upstairs area, which is where the various guest accommodations are. The home is furnished throughout beautifully with antiques and art reminiscent of the historical nature of the University and the area in general. We spent the day Saturday walking among and through the various buildings of Winthrop University which was like embarking on our own private museum tour. What a wonderful choice for a weekend getaway.

“Fantastic all around!”

We had such a wonderful experience staying at the Book and Spindle! Pam the owner was so kind and hospitable. The room we stayed in (the Charleston) was cozy, clean, comfortable and we even had a lovely little dining area where our delicious breakfast was served every morning! Also, we were so happy that this was a truly pet friendly place, as we brought our little chihuahua with us and she had a great time too!

I would definitely recommend this B&B for those seeking a truly charming and intimate experience. While there wasn't any wireless Internet and there was only a small cable tv in our room, we were vacationing and weren't really concerned with staying "connected".

We we definitely be staying here when we visit South Carolina again, hopefully soon!!

Room Tip: Charleston! Peaceful and cozy!

“Great Location Just Across Street from Winthrop University”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 October 2009

We were looking for accommodations really close to Winthrop University during our visit in early October 2009 for Family Weekend. Nothing is closer than The Book & The Spindle Bed & Breakfast Inn just across the street from Tillman Hall.

The brick Georgian home overlooking Winthrop University was designed by the same architectural firm responsible for many of the historical buildings on the Winthrop campus

We really enjoyed our 2 night stay and Pam Bowen, the Proprietor, was a very gracious host. There are 4 rooms and we stayed in the Glencarin Room. Slight drawbacks: no internet service and the shower is really small.

The room was nice and the bed was comfortable. A delicious breakfast was served each morning in our room. The rate was very reasonable at just under $80 per night. Again the location was convenient for access to all of the Rock Hill area and especially Winthrop.

“Great Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 June 2007

Very cute place and extremely friendly owner. The bed rolled a little to the center, but breakfast was excellent and exactly on time. I would stay here again, but would be sure to request a room with our own AC. The room next to us had a swamp cooler in addition to the central AC and we did not. We were roasting in the middle of the afternoon!

“Wonderful Getaway...”

We wanted to get away for the Labor Day weekend, but didn't want to go too far away, so we decided on Rock Hill, SC--just about 30 minutes from home. The Book and the Spindle (named for the local textile industry and college town) was delightful. The owner, Pam, greeted us when we arrived and had a wonderful equestrian themed room waiting for us. We had a private bath and kitchen with a veranda off the suite. A delicious breakfast was served in our room exactly when we scheduled it and the veranda was a wonderful place to eat and read the morning paper, which was delivered as well. The house was beautiful and full of history and age, having been built in 1888, I think. We spent the weekend exploring Winthrop's historic campus, playing tennis on local courts and eating in quaint restaurants around this lovely college town. And only 15 minutes from the Inn, we kayaked the Catawba River...It was a wonderfully inexpensive getaway weekend that we will soon repeat!!
