Wyndham Westwinds was an OK place, though not so great compared to some places I've been. My biggest problem wasn't really with the property, but with my room assignment. I rented a one bedroom and was given one of only four that have had their balconies chopped off. That is, rather than the pictured full-length balcony (spanning the living area and bedroom), the bedroom had no balcony. Only sealed sliding glass doors that looked directly out on the people who I'm sure could also look directly in. There was a much smaller than expected balcony off the living area only. This was not as was advertised.
I was on the 3rd floor; only one floor could have been lower and closer to the pool areas, which were noisy with the number of kids playing in them. I was directly above the door to the indoor pool; thank God I wasn't on the other side, where I would have also had the outdoor pool(s) directly beneath me.
Apparently these four units had their balconies chopped at some point to make way for a semi-circular, enclosed "veranda" directly above the indoor pool - and as a result of my balcony being chopped, there was no privacy divider between it and the "veranda," and I was just feet away from it, totally exposed to anyone who was in there.
Topping it all off, or should I say, not topping it all off, was the fact that my unit was one of only two in the resort that had not only the chopped balcony, but what balcony there was, was not covered. I guess I am fortunate that I had only one incident of someone from above dropping their dessert (or whatever it was) from above onto my balcony. With no roof over the balcony, I was unable to enjoy the frequent rain storms and unable to smoke when it was raining, as these are nonsmoking units except for the balconies.
So - for me - I felt totally exposed on almost all sides. Nothing between my bedroom "sliding" glass doors and people right below, nothing between my balcony and the people above, nothing between the side of my balcony and the large veranda right next to it. I figure out of however many units there were in this 10-story resort, I had to have been given about the 3rd worst I could've gotten - just my luck. Had I not been exhausted and already unpacked, I would have requested a different room, but I truly felt they would not have given one to me once I was already in the one they gave me. It also ticked me off because this was not a "set" room, i.e., Unit #304; the one bedroom was a "varies" unit, which means the people at the front desk had a choice of what one-bedroom unit to give me. I guess I must've looked like a sucker when I walked in the door. I know the resort was not full.
Other than the above, the unit itself was fairly adequate. The bathroom did have the smallest bathtub I've ever seen, but it was OK. The carpets are dated and need cleaning or replacements. I was also quite miffed that there was extremely poor lighting in the bedroom - almost impossible for night reading - and there were no side tables in the living room. Just a small coffee table, but no end tables - I had to pull the dining room table over to the sofa so I could use it for drinks, glasses, etc. But since I was able to do this, I was fairly comfortable. The kitchen was nice enough, though small. I guess I'm just used to larger, two-bedroom units.
The location was wonderful, in a quiet area of North Myrtle Beach, with almost no traffic, and very, very close to Barefoot Landing, for shopping and House of Blues.
All personnel I had contact with were very nice, and although I was scheduled for a meeting "to rate them" (read: to sell a timeshare), I didn't make it and wasn't hounded by frequent phone calls requesting my presence, as I have been at some places.
They had cook-outs at lunchtime a few days that I didn't attend, but I saw the menu and, while limited, it was adequate and very reasonably priced.
Their outdoor lawn is very well kept, and their lounge chairs on the lawn were comfortable and plentiful.
The only other minus at this resort is that it is almost unforgiveable to have such a small outdoor pool. It really cannot qualify as a swimming pool it's so small.
All in all, I would say - this place is not too bad and certainly, if you are renting a one bedroom, I would make certain you are not given units on the 2nd or third floor, as these are the ones with the chopped balconies and no privacy, plus, just too low to the ground, too close to the noise, and not so great of a view as there must have been from the higher floors. Otherwise, as long as you don't mind a basic, no-frills, place, and a miniscule outdoor pool, it's a fairly nice place. I would go again if I were certain I wouldn't be placed in one of the units I've described. I'm sure a two bedroom (or even a one bedroom) on one of the higher floors, and with the full balcony, would have been lovely.
