I stayed here on business and was pleasantly surprised. I don't generally care for being near the airport (you can absolutely hear planes coming and going throughout the day/night here), but the airport shuttle was convenient and speedy, no time wasted there. It is a 5-10 minute walk to get to just about any fast food chain you can dream of and the outlet malls. I didn't visit the malls, but if you're up for the walk, I'm sure it's probably worth it.
The hotel also hosts a shuttle for $15 roundtrip to downtown Charleston. A great thing to offer (and MUCH cheaper than a $25 cab ride one-way!), but the shuttle times are disappointing and difficult to schedule around, especially if you are working 8am-4pm, and the shuttles downtown leave at 4pm and 6pm and come back at 7:20pm and 9:20pm. I didn't want to rush to get downtown at 4pm when my class ended at the same time, but I didn't want to wait until 6pm and then get in around 9:45pm. It might be worth it to suck it up and pay for the taxi, especially if you can split it with a couple people. The shuttle also only accommodates 11 guests per run, so you have to sign up early and you pretty much have to stick to the one you signed up for (ie, you might get stuck downtown when you don't want to be).
As far as the hotel food, a buffet breakfast is offered and it was average at best. There is a chef that makes cooked to order omelettes that looked great, but I of course hate eggs so I was left with cereal, stale pancakes, breakfast sausages, bacon, tiny yogurts, tiny bagels, etc. There are a lot of beverage options, but there is almost no option if you're trying to really eat healthy. My co-worker had the lunch buffet and said it was decent.
The rooms here are huge and spacious since they are suites... a couch, table, tv, and kitchenette in the living area, a decent bathroom (with a fan!), and a bedroom with 2 queen beds and another tv. The cable offerings are better than most hotels (HGTV!). The beds and pillows were not too bad. Bed was a little harder than I’d like, but it wasn’t uncomfortable at all.
Charleston itself is beautiful once you get into the heart of its downtown. There are SO many awesome restaurants to choose from, great bars, homemade candy shops, and the architecture is really beautiful. Plus coming from MA, the weather in January was nothing to complain about - 70 and sunny when we arrived, while it was in the teens back home! I’d definitely go back to Charleston, but to fully enjoy its downtown you really need to get a hotel in the heart of the city.
Room Tip: Stay on a middle floor to drown out some of the overheard airplane noise and still be a bit away fro...
