We had a great time...relaxing and beautiful weather...staff and management super!
I had seen this property reviewed on TripAdvisor, and so decided to check it out when I needed lodging for a one night stay in Myrtle Beach. I was surprised before I arrived at how highly rated the location is, but have an idea what might be happening. Kathy, the manager, certainly is great, and the rooms are clean enough, but to my way of thinking - based on the age of the property and the lack of amenities - certainly not in the top 5% of Myrtle Beach area hotels, as the rating claims. Rather, I believe the property has a very loyal clientele who are regulars who have pumped up the rating.
One thing that was interesting - just about all of the other guests the day/evening I stayed there were sitting outside their rooms, or on the deck around the pool, smoking cigarettes. The rooms are all non-smoking, but the property isn't. Maybe the high rating is also connected to the fact that the property is in that way 'smoker-friendly.'
When I go to the beach I want a property that at least has a jacuzzi. As Holiday Shores does not, I will not stay here again. That said - for good, clean, comfortable, and affordable accomodations across the street from the beach, this is a good place.
We (myself, husband, mom-in-law and 2 sons; 4 and 2 yrs.) stayed here from 9/11-9/15. First off, I was sooo greatful that they allowed us to check in @ 12:45! We had arrived in Myrtle Beach at 7:45am; after driving from Ohio we were exhausted.
The Setting:
Located 1 kinda big block from the beach, about a 5 min. walk. You cross 1 non-busy street to get there. The area is very quiet; this is either a good or bad thing. If you are wanting a hotel that is in "the heart of all the stores/attractions" this is NOT it. This unfortunately is the one thing it was lacking. It's about a 10 min. drive to get to the boardwalk/heart of Myrtle Beach. Parking includes meters, which can be a pain or pay $5-$10 to park in a lot. It was nice, however that the beach was not crowded since it was away from all that stuff.
The Hotel:
Driving up, you will not be ecstatic. It's not frilly, it's a 2 story building; but I personally liked that it had some charm to it- not like the stuffy 10 story hotels that lack the beachy feeling. The hotel itself could use some sprucing up, the rooms are a little run down. However, the beds were comfortable and the best part is that it was CLEAN!! The only thing I could say is that there were some cob-webs around the windows and the vents were dusty. Our socks didn't turn black from the carpet, there was nothing lurking under the beds or night stands, the fridge was spotless. We didn't bring any little creatures home with us. As a mom I liked that it had a chain lock on the door also, so my sons couldn't just walk out. It also had a good layout, there was a sleeper sofa, a qn. bed in one "room" (there wasn't a door) and then 2 full beds in the back room, so you could put the kids in there and hear them walk by.The hotel was very quiet at night. The outdoor area was very nice, a pool that went up to 6 ft and a little pool for the young ones. It had a swing set, a grill and swing to sit on for adults. They even had bikes you could borrow for free! The staff was friendly and helpful, the housekeepers were great. We had absolutely no problems during our stay. We would definately stay there again...the only thing that would keep us from not would be if we decided we wanted to be closer to the attractions.
Recommendations:
Places to eat: The Boardwalk Snack and Ice Cream-located by the fun plaza arcade on the boardwalk, good prices, good food; Pier 14-excellent location, good food, avg. price; Bennet's Calabash-on Hwy 17, all you can eat buffet $31 w/ drink & tax. They have a menu for none-seafood eaters such as myself, excellent value, great service! Visit Family Kingdom, awesome for kids 36"+.....we got a book of 54 tix for $50. If you're gonne be there for 2 hours or less, I would just get the book, that way everyone can use the tickets. If you're gonna be there more than 2 hours, I'd get wristbands. The kids' food is reasonably priced, but adults watch out! $8 for a hotdog, fries & drink! If you visit the Nascar Speed Park, I don't recommend going if you have kids under age 5...not much for them to do. Oh, everything here is taxed, food tax at Wendy's was 11%! It was a great trip though, we had a lot of fun. Gas was anywhere from $3.30-$3.48 during our stay, cheaper than Ohio!
My daughter and I very much enjoyed our two night stay at Holiday Shores. This little gem of a motel is perfect for a quiet, relaxing, and easygoing vacation. Situated perfectly on Ocean blvd. it took about 4-5 mins. to walk to the beach and the best part was we didnt have to wait on elevators or being overcrowded by people. We loved the fact that this motel was not big but was in fact small and cozy with its little gardens, bar-b-que grill, swings for the kids, and even a sandbox. We will definitely be visiting next year and will enjoy staying with the family of Holiday Shores. Many thanks to Laurel for making our check in smooth and easy we hope to see you next year.
Everyone at Holiday Shores is so friendly and helpful....it is a relaxing getaway....Kathy and all the folks do an excellent....Everything is very well kept, neat and clean...we will stay again!
