“Nice rooms, horrible beds”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

We have made many trips to Myrtle Beach in late January or early February for a family reunion. Love the looks and set up of the rooms, but the beds ....ouch! We had rooms with a total of eleven beds. Only three beds were comfortable. The other beds were like sleeping on the floor..hard and terribly uncomfortable. Time to check out other hotels if we want to get a good night's sleep!

Room Tip: If you want a good night's sleep...sleep in another hotel.

Condo owners in the Grand Atlantic are constantly working to make their units more comfortable for their guests. Many owners replaced their master bedroom mattresses last year, and are replacing the other beds this year. Our next delivery of new mattresses is set for next week so even more of our mattresses will be better. When making a reservation, you can request a room with upgraded mattresses and we will place you in a unit where the owner has replaced them. We want everyone to be as comfortable as possible and in concert with our owners are working diligently to improve every day. Thanks for visiting!

“Needs improvement, but still the best on the beach!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

We stayed here the week of January 22-29, 2012 for a mini family reunion that happens about every other year. We had 3 units - 1104, 1204, and the 4BR combo room #2007. This was my 2nd or 3rd time staying at Grand Atlantic. We originally were attracted to the property when it was first built and we were allowed to tour the rooms after our stay at a once grand, now dumpy property, Ocean Park. Here are some thoughts on our stay:

POSITIVES:
- Grand Atlantic is (in my opinion) still the best mid-range resort on the beach...meaning the best place that has modern facilities in good repair without spending big $$ at Hampton Inn, Anderson Ocean Club, etc. I have researched literally hundreds of hotels on the beach, and the Grand Atlantic is without a doubt the only property that meets our budget without sacrificing modern, clean rooms.
- Security is good. At night, the interior corridors are accessible by key card only. This is important as there can be some less-than-desirable activities happening on the street outside. We also noticed a large group of rowdy people being evicted...we were glad to know that they work hard to keep the resort safe and quiet.
- Pool features are good. Indoors there is a pool, kiddie pool, and lazy river. Outdoors there is a pool and another kiddie pool.
- BIG PLUS: we were informed by the front desk staff that an indoor hot tub is being added sometime in the next few months (early 2012). This is a much-needed addition, so kudos to the Grand Atlantic for listening to their customers.

NEGATIVES:
- As is the case with most Myrtle Beach resorts, the property is starting to wear. We noticed several areas in our rooms (1204, 2007) where the carpet is coming loose and bunching up; there were several spots in the ceiling that showed attempts at patching seam lines in the sheetrock; carpet in the hallways is showing wear now; we noticed a slight odor in our 3BR unit (2007) - which was no big deal, but a fresh clean smell is more preferred; I also noticed that the game room no longer exists and the fitness center now consists of a few machines and a TV in a conference room on the 7th floor. No big deal for us, but it is cause for concern for future stays if they aren't maintaining what was originally built.
- The master bedrooms are the only rooms with comfortable beds. The back rooms have queens/doubles that are (I am not exaggerating) rock hard and extremely uncomfortable. I know the resort probably has a tight budget to keep prices down, but it seems like they could put a few extra bucks into some mattresses that have at least a little cushioning.
- The indoor pool and lazy river were a little chilly. The maintenance man told us they were set as high as they could be set (90°). We were a little doubtful of that.

In summary, I still highly recommend the Grand Atlantic. Unlike many other resorts in MB, Grand Atlantic doesn't have decor from the 90's or worn, dingy facilities that make you uncomfortable. My advice to the staff would be this: please take care of the property and don't let it go the direction of so many others in the area (example: Ocean Park, once a great place, now a complete dump). If the property is kept up-to-date and in good repair, our family will be repeat customers for years to come.

Room Tip: Expect comfortable beds only in master bedrooms. From the 6th floor and below, the hallways are dark...

Thank you so much for your review and recommendation of our resort. We are very thankful that you had a wonderful experience here with us this month. We'd like to provide our guests with an update of some of the changes we are making to the resort. The resort was opened in late 2006 without a game room. We had a small fitness center on the ground level that had only 4 pieces of equipment due to the small space. This month, we relocated our fitness center to a much larger space on the 7th floor that allowed us to add an extra treadmill, free weights and a couple other new pieces of equipment. Moving the fitness center will allow us to add a game room to the now vacant space on the ground floor. The game room machines should be added sometime in February. Another improvement this guest will appreciate is that all of the hallway carpets are being replaced this year. Hopefully, prior to summer season. In addition, owners of the individual condos are also continuing to upgrade their units. Since we received several complaints about hard beds since the resort opened, homeowners have been encouraged to replace their beds to meet guest requests. Most homeowners started that process within the last 2 years and many did the master bedroom beds first. We have this year's bed delivery coming in February and even more of the beds in the resort will have been replaced. In-room carpet is also being replaced in about 30% of the units this year. The resort and its individual homeowners continue to make investments in the property to keep us comfortable and looking fresh. A new hot tub and pool deck are also being installed this Spring. Thanks to all of our guests and their continued patronage which is allowing us to make these further investments in the property.

“Annual Golf Trip Stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

We ( 4 guys on our annual golf trip) decided on Grand Atlantic after looking at dozens of different places web pages and reviews. Dealing with the Grand Atlantic staff on the phone and emails were great. Nothing but professional and friendly from start to finish. The room ( a three bedroom condo) was very nice, clean, comfortable, and enjoyable. Everything was clean, the beds comfortable, furniture new, and the view great. The store and grill on the ground floor was very nice and prices very reasonable. We all stated that we would come back with our families. None of us had anything negative to stay with our stay at Grand Atlantic.

“Can do much better”

I wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone. We stayed for four nights. The room appeared nice and neat. Then came construction noise from the room next door. Our vacation was the week on Christmas and there were numerous rooms available. Why we were put in a room where construction was going on next door is beyond me. The next day, construction in the condo above us! You can't use the oven or the smoke detector alarms. Also, you can't get the room thermostat to work. You're either freezing or burning up. When we asked the maintenance man to show us how it works, he informed us he wasn't allowed to show us! The thermostat is digital and connected to the balcony door sensor. If the door is left open for more than 3 minutes, the thermostat doesn't work. The door was never left open and the thermostat still didn't work! This is a crappy place and I wouldn't stay here again. There are too many nice places to stay for the same amount of money.

I would first like to apologize to this reviewer for their experience not exceeding their expectations. Our goal is to not only meet our guests expectations, but exceed them whenever possible. There are a couple of clarifications that are relevant in this case. Since Myrtle Beach is very much a warm weather destination, December and January are really the only opportunities to make improvements to the property for the future enjoyment of all guests. To lessen any impact on our current guests, we provide contractors with a 4-hour window (11am-3pm) to conduct any work that would create bothersome noise for guests. We feel that this small window is a fair way to get the work done while lessening the impact on our guests as much as possible. In this case, the reviewer checked in shortly before 1pm. When they arrived at their room, there was some minor carpet work being done in the room next to them that we were unaware of. (The units are individually owned and not all homeowners will advise us when they have work being done). The guest called to make a complaint about the noise so we immediately called the contractor to find out what was being done. The contractor said they would be finished in 15 minutes and there would be no more noise. The guest was called back and advised that they would be finished in 15 minutes to which they replied "We'll give them 10". No other work was done affecting their stay until 3 days later. Again, work was only done between 11am and 3pm and was in a room 2 floors above them. We are very sorry that this has caused an inconvenience in this instance, but I would be more concerned if I stayed in a hotel in Myrtle Beach during December and January and there was no work being done. If work isn't being done in those two months, it probably isn't getting done at all which leads to worn rooms.

Maintenance personnel reported that they did explain to the guest how the thermostat worked. What they could not show them was the administrative password to access the inner menus of the system. The password is for main installation and testing of the unit and is not needed to operate the thermostat in anyway. All controls of temperature, fan, heat and cooling are not affected by the password.

It is good to note that absent the inconvenient mid-afternoon noise and misunderstanding with the thermostat, there were no negative comments made regarding the quality of the accommodations, service or cleanliness of the unit. I am confident that this reviewer would have a difficult time finding a better room elsewhere for any price.

Certainly, we would love the opportunity to serve this guest again. On their next visit, there would most likely be no work being done and their experience would be more in tune with the actual Grand Atlantic vacation.
