We stayed here the week of January 22-29, 2012 for a mini family reunion that happens about every other year. We had 3 units - 1104, 1204, and the 4BR combo room #2007. This was my 2nd or 3rd time staying at Grand Atlantic. We originally were attracted to the property when it was first built and we were allowed to tour the rooms after our stay at a once grand, now dumpy property, Ocean Park. Here are some thoughts on our stay:
POSITIVES:
- Grand Atlantic is (in my opinion) still the best mid-range resort on the beach...meaning the best place that has modern facilities in good repair without spending big $$ at Hampton Inn, Anderson Ocean Club, etc. I have researched literally hundreds of hotels on the beach, and the Grand Atlantic is without a doubt the only property that meets our budget without sacrificing modern, clean rooms.
- Security is good. At night, the interior corridors are accessible by key card only. This is important as there can be some less-than-desirable activities happening on the street outside. We also noticed a large group of rowdy people being evicted...we were glad to know that they work hard to keep the resort safe and quiet.
- Pool features are good. Indoors there is a pool, kiddie pool, and lazy river. Outdoors there is a pool and another kiddie pool.
- BIG PLUS: we were informed by the front desk staff that an indoor hot tub is being added sometime in the next few months (early 2012). This is a much-needed addition, so kudos to the Grand Atlantic for listening to their customers.
NEGATIVES:
- As is the case with most Myrtle Beach resorts, the property is starting to wear. We noticed several areas in our rooms (1204, 2007) where the carpet is coming loose and bunching up; there were several spots in the ceiling that showed attempts at patching seam lines in the sheetrock; carpet in the hallways is showing wear now; we noticed a slight odor in our 3BR unit (2007) - which was no big deal, but a fresh clean smell is more preferred; I also noticed that the game room no longer exists and the fitness center now consists of a few machines and a TV in a conference room on the 7th floor. No big deal for us, but it is cause for concern for future stays if they aren't maintaining what was originally built.
- The master bedrooms are the only rooms with comfortable beds. The back rooms have queens/doubles that are (I am not exaggerating) rock hard and extremely uncomfortable. I know the resort probably has a tight budget to keep prices down, but it seems like they could put a few extra bucks into some mattresses that have at least a little cushioning.
- The indoor pool and lazy river were a little chilly. The maintenance man told us they were set as high as they could be set (90°). We were a little doubtful of that.
In summary, I still highly recommend the Grand Atlantic. Unlike many other resorts in MB, Grand Atlantic doesn't have decor from the 90's or worn, dingy facilities that make you uncomfortable. My advice to the staff would be this: please take care of the property and don't let it go the direction of so many others in the area (example: Ocean Park, once a great place, now a complete dump). If the property is kept up-to-date and in good repair, our family will be repeat customers for years to come.
Room Tip: Expect comfortable beds only in master bedrooms. From the 6th floor and below, the hallways are dark...

Thank you so much for your review and recommendation of our resort. We are very thankful that you had a wonderful experience here with us this month. We'd like to provide our guests with an update of some of the changes we are making to the resort. The resort was opened in late 2006 without a game room. We had a small fitness center on the ground level that had only 4 pieces of equipment due to the small space. This month, we relocated our fitness center to a much larger space on the 7th floor that allowed us to add an extra treadmill, free weights and a couple other new pieces of equipment. Moving the fitness center will allow us to add a game room to the now vacant space on the ground floor. The game room machines should be added sometime in February. Another improvement this guest will appreciate is that all of the hallway carpets are being replaced this year. Hopefully, prior to summer season. In addition, owners of the individual condos are also continuing to upgrade their units. Since we received several complaints about hard beds since the resort opened, homeowners have been encouraged to replace their beds to meet guest requests. Most homeowners started that process within the last 2 years and many did the master bedroom beds first. We have this year's bed delivery coming in February and even more of the beds in the resort will have been replaced. In-room carpet is also being replaced in about 30% of the units this year. The resort and its individual homeowners continue to make investments in the property to keep us comfortable and looking fresh. A new hot tub and pool deck are also being installed this Spring. Thanks to all of our guests and their continued patronage which is allowing us to make these further investments in the property.
