I had suggested to a group of youth from our church to book this resort for an event they were attending New Year's Weekend at Mrytle Beach. My husband and I had toured the resort ourselves in September and was impressed with what we saw - but we did not stay at the resort. And closer to our trip I began reading some of the comments from other travelers who had stayed there resently. I became very concerned. I am a very picky individual but I do take all things into consideration when making my comments here. This property is one of four sister properties I have stayed at in Myrtle/North Myrtle over the past several years.
I will start off with my negatives
Let me start off with the fact when we arrived the individual in front of us was switching rooms for some reason - don't know if there was a problem with the room or not. Next there was only one individual working the front desk so check in took longer, which our group was very patient - and the front desk clerk kept apologizing for the wait - that was a positive.
When I checked in I was asked for the card that held the reservation - which was our church's card - naturally that isn't carried by any of us. SO my personal credit card had to be held for any incidentials that might occur - the reservations were listed under my name with notes indicating it was for a church group. SO those of you who make group reservations under one name - please remember this bit of information.
The parking - we had a bus, a van with a trailer and a personal car. The bus and van had to park on the outside of the resort in a sort of alley area - the parking deck itself was a tight maze of twist and turns.
Our rooms - I can only provide you photos of the room I stayed in - 601 - but I did notice issues with some of the other rooms - especially 101. I was sort of shocked the place had so many knicks, dings and issues considering this property is only about 4 years old. Considering the fact this was a youth group and my card was held for incidentials - I immediately took photos of all issues in our room so nothing could be stated that our group did the damages.
There were minor holes in the walls, tears in the upholstery of the sleeper sofa. In room 601 the tv remote in the living area didn't work, the light over the stove didn't work. These were immediately reported around 3pm, but were not repaired until the following day mid-day. It wasn't until the 2nd day I inquired what problems the other groups were having after we dealt with the fact the sleeper sofa in our room was broken - I will detail this issue further in this review- we reserved 4 rooms - Room 201 's tv remote and hairdryer in the king bedroom didn't work, one of the small lights over the kitchen counter was broken , Room 101 had a issue with their door key entrance lock which was worked on the first day and fixed, 2nd day we were notified of missing door cabinet, light and fan over the stove didn't work - the only room without any issues was 401. I went to the front desk with my list in hand around 9am to report these issues - all were repaired by 1pm on the 2nd day excluding the issue with the sleeper sofa and missing cabinet door.
The sleeper sofa issue - we didn't bother to check out the sleeper sofa until time we needed it - which happened to be around 11pm 1st day - it was broken, front desk was immediately notified - they sent a security guard to the room to check it out -by 12:50 I had a message left on our phone that they were unable to access the roll away beds and a technician would look at it in the morning - so we pulled the mattress off the sleeper sofa and placed it on the floor for one of the youth to sleep on. Additionally we didn't know until we were departing on 1-1-12 by the other house parents that the telephone in our room didn't work - I could call out but they including the front desk could not call in to us - so that's why they front desk only left me messages. The technician looked at the sleeper sofa mid-day of day 2 and said it was broken - we already knew that and commented he didn't know if he could find us roll away beds or not - we advised they needed to - by about 4pm we had the roll away beds in our room.
Now then all those negative issues are covered and were resolved - but I wanted folks to understand to expect some issues with your room upon arrival and know that the folks at Horizon will attend to them - maybe not as quickly as you had hoped but they will fix it.
Now the positives
As you will see from the photos this resort is decorated beautifully. Additionally not only do you have access to their ammenities but considering one of their sister properites is next door you have access to their ammentities as week. The resort has a beautiful view of the ocean if you are higher than 2nd floor - 1st and 2nd floor basically can see a small view of the ocean, pool and trees across the street.
The front desk clerks are polite and positive and try to address your needs as quickly as possible.
The pool areas are very clean, you do have to obtain your pool towels at the front desk.
All in all this was a good stay but I had to rate it as average because of the issues with the rooms - had it just been one room I may have rated it higher but being 3 of the 4 rooms reserved had problems I had to give it only a average rating. Would I consder staying here again - possibly - but if there is room at the sister properties for the same price I would stay with them first.
Room Tip: Get a room higher than 2nd floor to get a better view of the ocean
