“Overall still a great place to stay, but housekeeping let me down”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 August 2011

I have been coming to the Main Street inn for 5 years. This is the first time that housekeeping has let me down.

First - the good: the gardens, the quiet location of the hotel and the hot American breakfast buffet. which changes offerings daily. The rooms are not your typical hotel rooms. They have character; unique decor. The bathrooms are large. The Inn is not located near a beach. The closest beach is about 1/2 mile away. There is a small shopping center with a great restaurant , Frankie Bones, across the street. No room key cards here, just old style large brass keys . There is no large foyer with a huge reception desk and staff. The entrance sits off of what would appear to be a pass through for carriages. Inside you will see a large wooden desk, which is where you will find the person who is front desk , concierge, and afternoon barkeep all in one.
The front desk person on this trip was Te and she was great.
There are only 32 rooms here. They serve wine and beer in the afternoon. You have a chance for a drink and to mingle with other guests to share experiences and recommendations.

The pool is small, more of a fountain to wade in, with drop offs on either side.
The garden invites you to wander through, with benches within, to sit and contemplate.

So, why do I think housekeeping was a let down.
1. The decorative pillows and bed cover once taken off by me, were never put back on the bed. They were left pilled on the chair where I put them.
2. The water glass I used, was left on the night stand and never taken away during my entire stay, nor was a new put in the bath room.
3. The sheets did not seem to be changed. The bed was not made up in a crisp manner.

In spite of the house keeping short fall, I will be coming back. I am sure this will be addressed by management.

“We will be back”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 August 2011

Loved the Main Street Inn! The bathroom was large and the covered everything we could possibley need for our stay! Staff was friendly, garden was well maintained and it gave us more of a comfortable home feel not the stale commercial standard hotel theme we find in hotel chains. We will be back on our next visit...

Room Tip: Rooms are basic, simple, large bathrooms, comfortable beds

“Disappointing Housekeeping and Maintenance”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 July 2011

The Main Street Inn has great potential with beautiful gardens and old-world charm, although the layout is much like a two-story motel. Rooms have exterior entrances. Hot breakfast was good with scrambled eggs, bacon, potatoes, biscuits, and gravy available each morning from 7:30 to 10:30. However, the housekeeping and attention to details was the worst of any hotel I've ever experienced. I stopped at the office at around 5:00 p.m. to check in and found no one at the lobby desk. I waited for ten minutes (and this is not an exaggeration) before anyone acknowledged me (other than another guest who was at the computer nearby) -- this after wandering around the lobby, sitting room, and breakfast area looking for someone to help me. Not a good first impression. When I was finally able to check in, I had difficulty opening the door lock. Keys are the old hardware variety, and the locks are not easy to open (or lock). No one offered to help me with my baggage, although I was staying four nights and I was obviously travelling alone - a single woman in my mid-50s. The room was a pleasing size with a large, lovely bathroom. But the entire place had a threadbare feel. The bed linens were well-worn, and the comforter, pillow shams, and dust skirt needed retiring long ago. The mismatched furnishings all needed updated. The room had not had a fresh coat of paint in years. The "old-fashioned" style radio should have been ditched long ago -- the volume and tuning control adjustments were so dirty that all one could hear is static when the radio tuned in at all. The hardware in the bathroom, once brass-plated, was worn down to the nickel plating underneath. The bathtub needed attention with caulk and paint where it joined the floor. The upper shelf of the separate shower had obviously been used at some point by a mouse -- with droppings evident. The entire room had a light layer of dust everywhere -- as if no one had been in the room for three or four days. The top drawer of the dresser offered up a small boy's pair of sneakers and a set of colorful underwear that housekeeping had ignored. When I finally found the coffeepot, it had been used before with obvious coffee stains -- housekeeping hadn't bothered to even rinse it out before putting the coffeepot away. I stayed for four nights. On two occasions when I returned to the room, housekeeping had not left soap -- so I repeatedly used just one tiny bar of bath soap. The bed was made, but in a sloppy manner with wrinkles in the blankets showing through the worn comforter. I'm not sure the linens were ever changed while I was there, although the hotel guide said they would be changed every other night. When I spoke to the manager upon checkout (as kindly as I could) about my disappointment with the housekeeping and maintenance, he was very apologetic and polite, but he did not even offer to discount my room rate ($189 per night plus tax and a $5.00 per night "resort fee"). This hotel has a great deal of potential, but it "just misses" in many small ways. I noted several Fodor's awards posted in the lobby area. If I were Fodor's or any other travel guide organization, I would not want my signs posted anywhere on this property. I am not a clean freak, but everyone who considers staying here deserves to know the truth about what to expect.

“Not even shabby chic”

We had stayed here years ago and loved it. Unfortunately, they have not kept this inn up at all. We informed the front desk that the knob in the shower came off in our hands and that the liner wasn't attached, but nothing was done. Carpet was filthy. Our second room had soap scum left on the shower curtain liner. The breakfast was cold and we had to Ask forplates, silverware, napkins, and glasses. At 10 am, we were told to get out of the dining room. The pool is tiny. I know that the hotel is under new ownership, and I hope that they remove the armoire so that they can put a tv larger than twelve inches. They should move the refrigerator and put a closet in it's place.

Room Tip: Stay someone else!

“Disappointed in cleanliness/condition of room!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 July 2011

My family and I have stayed at the Main Street Inn for over 15 years. We have noticed the Inn gradually declining in cleanliness, to the point now that we will no longer return. On our most recent trip, we were surprised at the condition of the room when we arrived. Here is what we found: a large blood stained and torn bed skirt, questionable stains on a pillow sham, enormous amount of dust on ceiling fan, tables and window blind. The carpets were dirty with visible stains. Had we not paid in advance for our room, we most certainly would have checked out. To make matters worse, the following day, when we returned to our room, we found that the glass shelf in the bathroom was still dirty, the used glasses had not been replaced, and the beds were not made up (the covers were thrown back as though someone had been sitting on the beds). The outside of the Inn is lovely, and at first glance, a new traveler would have no idea what is in-store for them inside their room. We sincerely hope that the Inn will consider making significant improvements to the property.
