The resort is located within a gated resort community ("The shipyard plantation") shared by tennis and golf clubs. Access by car is through a security checkpoint just off the main road. First time in you will be stopped for a minute while the guard gives you a temporary pass. It is later replaced by another one issued by the hotel, and re-entry is quick after that.
If you arrive to hilton head island at night, be prepared for near blackout conditions. Zoning and sea-turtle protection regulations mean that there is no street lighting. Signs for stores, restaurants and etc. consist of short wooden signs on the ground, lit externally with dim lights. Due to the number of trees and low lighting, it is virtually impossible to identify places from the road at night. GPS definitely helps, although you can not get too lost, it is an island after all :)
The hotel grounds are maintained in excellent condition and the attention to detail continues once you enter the hotel. As other commentors have noted, the decor is a little bit dated, but the hallways, rooms and common areas are maintained in immaculate condition. Food was good-quality and reasonably priced. The menu in the restaurant was surprisingly identical to the room service menu although the reduced selection could be due to the fact that it was off-season (January).
The rooms are spacious and come with balcony and chairs. The "jet flush" toilets are loud and unfortunately the water noise is audible from other rooms.
The room rate was very reasonable however, it was a group rate so your individual results may vary. I would also recommend confirming the add on "resort fees" before booking, to get a complete picture of the actual cost.
The beach is a short walk out the back of the hotel and goes on as far as the eye can see in both directions. It is a mixture of soft and hard sand making it perfect for hiking, biking, or lounging.
All the staff I encountered where very hospitable, friendly, and eager to help.
