We're a family of 4 with two small children. We exchanged into Royal Dunes through Diamond and went more or less sight unseen. We were pleased with the accommodations.
Hilton Head is chock-a-block with timeshare and condo resorts, and RD is simply one of many. That said, the property, which is intermingled with several other properties on the same drive, is cleanly kept up, our unit was clean and tidy upon arrival, and the staff were friendly and helpful. Remember that at this level of timesharing, you're largely on your own, not on a "resort" with activities, bar service and restaurants.
While the property had a slightly "underused" feel to it, we were not there in high season. We used the main pool on several days, which is small by bigger resort standards but was heated and with small children was perfectly fine. We swam and sunned and were content with it.
HHI is primarily about golf and beach vacations. As to the beach, this property gets a plus for being a very short walk to a very nice HHI beach (Folly Field). I've walked further to the beach in many other places. The beach is public, but the majority of the parking is for local badge holders only. This won't matter if you're staying at RD, as you will be walking. There was a shuttle available from the resort, but I think it would have taken longer to take it than to just walk it.
As to the unit itself, we were in building 4 in a 3-bedroom. The bedrooms were comfortable and the kitchen/dining area was clean and well stocked with proper utensils and supplies. Better than most, actually. There were no bugs or other issues.
The living space was a bit small, and if we had had 6 people, I think we would have been a little cramped. We were on the 1st floor without much view of anything, however we were largely busy during the days and didn't particularly notice this. We did not use the balcony for dining as it there were mosquitos about (as there were almost everywhere we went).
Here's my summary:
Pros: Clean & comfortable resort and unit, very close to a nice beach (close enough to be considered 'almost on the water' in my opinion). Good base camp for your HHI golf and/or beach vacation. Close to other resorts + golf. The highway w/ food/fuel/shopping is less than a 5 minute drive away. Overall a good place without much pizzazz.
Cons: This is not a razzle-dazzle resort with bar/restaurant and a water feature. The unit would have likely been cramped for 6 adults. The resort is quiet, in a quiet area (this could also be seen as a plus!). Also, finding the resort at first can be a tad confusing.
Would I go back here again? Yes, if my intention was to have a self-sufficient beach vacation with access to a pool. Also if I were on a golfing vacation (which you can do from nearly any place on the island).
I give the property 4 stars for being everything we needed for a fun, reasonably inexpensive family vacation.
The following information is not directly related to Royal Dunes:
We found a good babysitter using guardianangelssittingservice.com. $16/hr.
The jellyfish on the beach are benign. If they bother you, buy surfing type swim wear tops/bottoms.
Publix, Piggly Wiggly, Harris Teeter and other shopping is reasonably close by.
Our best meal was at the Old Oyster Factory. We ate outside on the deck and watched the sun set. Good food and great views. We also got decent sushi (take out) at Kurama.
Bring bug spray everywhere. No-seeums and mosquitos abound, but are easily taken care of with a couple squirts of spray.
Some plantations are very protective of their privacy and the guards will turn you away unless you have a purpose for being there, such as visiting a restaurant located inside the plantation grounds.
Visit Harbortown for the sites, shops, ice cream. Has a nice european/american feel to it. $5 to get into the Sea Pines plantation for the day.
We did a private dolphin tour with Live Oac Outdoor Adventures. Great guide, lots of fun.
If you don't golf, I can't think of a better place to take a lesson and give it a try than HHI.
