We were given Room 401 on the top floor. As I walked down to my room, I passed the ice machine that was IN THE HALL (not in a nook) and thought, "Wow, I'm glad I'm not in the room next to that!" (Oh, if only I knew that a room by the noisy ice machine would have been a better option!) Room was basic and clean, but old (80s wallpaper in bathroom, TV not flatscreen).
Went to sleep. Was awakened at 3:30 a.m. by an extremely loud jackhammer sound that was literally vibrating my bed. Went into hall and discovered sound was coming from stairwell. Opened door and saw some sort of compressor machine on the floor making the racket. Went back to room, called front desk, and said, "Are you aware that there's some sort of machine making an incredible noise in the stairwell?" Clerk says, "Oh yeah, that's part of our sprinkler system." I say, "So this is a regular occurrence?" Clerk says, "Yeah, that room is terrible and I try to avoid giving it to people." I say, "You're telling me that you knowingly gave the worst room in your motel to a Gold elite member who is 5 nights away from Platinum status?" He says, "Well...it wasn't me, it was the evening clerk who did it."
Humph. The only reason I didn't give the hotel one star was that I emailed the manager, who refunded our money, so at least he demonstrated good customer service in that aspect. But combined with the fact that the rooms in the center of the hotel are next to the world's loudest ice machine, this hotel was just plain unacceptable and in my opinion, not worthy of the Fairfield name. Also, the nearly $100 price was ridiculous considering what you get.
Room Tip: Room 401 is the worst room ever; also rooms in the middle of the hall are close to the ice machine...
