I have been to Edisto before and loved it. Rented houses previously. This time I took 2 friends and stayed at an Egrets Pointe Townhouse on the strength of other tripadvsor reviews and was not disappointed. The rates were better than a house. The group next door said they had been coming to Egret's Pointe for the past 24 years! That speaks volumes.
The two check in staff people were terrific - answered all our questions. A+ for them.
The unit was very clean with excellent kitchen cookware and utensils. Loved the reverse osmosis water filter on the sink and for ice cubes - saved us having to lug in water (low country tap water is brackish and nasty). Had to use an aircard supplied by the office for internet access - PC only. There is also free wifi at McConky's and Edisto Bookstore. The decor is pretty 1980's but I don't expect designer interiors with beach rentals, so it was fine. Nice deck out back. We didn't get to see the resident alligators.
2 bicycles come with the unit - nice biking on roads and trails. One tire was flat and the office responded promptly.
5 minute drive to the beach - there are parking areas practically on every block. Mid-September was perfect - no crowds, still warm in 80's and the ocean temperature perfect! There can be hurricanes this time of year but we lucked out. We went on a kayak tour with Edisto Watersports which is right at the entrance of the Windham resort where Egrets Pointe is located. Also great staff at Edisto Watersports. The seafood store next door had fresh seafood we cooked at our townhouse. McConkey's had yummy fried seafood (it's vacation - forget that diet!), the Seacow makes awesome breakfasts (lunch looked like it would be good, too.), The Pavilion had a great view (full moon rising at dusk) but the food was definitely subpar and not cheap. We got super vegetables, casseroles and more at King's farm stand a few miles before the beach on the main road. Great place.
Edisto is a wonderful place if you like a natural, unspoiled beach (other than the beach houses). If you want an endless line of kitschy beach shops, hotels and night life go to Myrtle Beach. If you like sitting on the beach, swimming and watching dolphins, Edisto is the best. You can also take a day trip to Charleston and Beaufort is also worth visiting for the historic houses and lighthouse (Forest Gump was filmed there, in part).
