“Fell well short of expectations, but good response from management”

We stayed here for two nights in December. The hotel fell well short of our expectations, however management did a good job making up for the shortcomings and we walked away satisfied with our concerns addressed. The most significant issue we ran into was noise from the hallway, you could hear it as though it was in your own room. The rooms are a bit dated and do have an odd smell as others have pointed out, something like a cleaning fluid type smell. For the price though compared to other full service hotels in Charleston, we were satisfied. The location is very convenient and the free parking is a plus. Bottom line is that this hotel is probably fine for a short business stay, but I'd recommend staying somewhere else for a Charleston vacation or getaway.

“Nice, remodeled hotel...”

I stayed with my wife during the Rep. primaries and was pleased with everything. The lobby was brand new and the restaurant seemed very nice. Pros: nice free coffee, updated bathroom and shower, linens and pillows, quiet. Cons: Too far way to walk to the market and the real downtown Charleston, Parking isn't great, and wifi isnt free. Overall, it is a very nice, safe place, but stay somewhere downtown if you are only experiencing the city once.

“DIRTY”

I am Marriott Platinum Premier guest so I have stayed at a many Marriott properties over the years. I was only at the hotel for about 7.5 hours and that was enough. I could not wait to get out of the room and on my way. From the minute I walked in the back door of the hotel to walk through the meeting area to the front desk I noticed this was not a typical clean Marriott property. The carpet throughout the meeting areas were spotted and very dirty. The lobby area was marginal at best. I arrived at 11:00 PM and knew I would be out first thing in the morning or I would never have checked in to start with. If the lobby and common areas are not clean that is typically an indication the rooms will be worse. The elevator was dirty and the carpet in the hallways was dirty with the wallpaper coming off the walls in many places. The room was very dirty as well. This property is in very bad need of renovations. I would highly recommend selecting another hotel in Charleston if cleanliness is important to you.

The service was also very slow. The front desk cleak did not even recognize that I was a Platinum Premier Guest nor thank me for my business. I had to call several times to request firm pillows be delivered to my room. The same security guard I had seen walking around the parking lot when I arrived finally delivered one of the three pillows I requested.

I cannot really speak to the location with the late arrival and early departure but it did not appear to be anything special and off the beaten path. All I wanted to do was get as far away from the filth of this room as I could.

I requested a walk in shower and was given an accessible room. The bathroom was set up terrible for a person in need of an ADA bathroom. There was no vanity and the bars next to the toilet made it almost impossible to set on the toilet.

The worst part of this hotel was the pornography on the TV. Just flipping through the channels I saw this. It had to have been a pay per view and not sure why it was on but it was. It is high time for Marriott to remove all pornography from their properties.

“accessible rooms”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 January 2012

accessible rooms are undesirable - there was no vanity and old style single sink, no grab-bar next to toilet, the toilet was not ADA compliant with latest goverment standards - it was too low, and the walls were so thin and you could hear a convesation in the next adjoining room.
i was inapropiately charged for a breakfast that was included in my room rate. the maid service is extremely slow and rooms fail to be cleaned. i would not recommend this hotel to seniors or anyone needing a proper ADA accesible room.

“Hotel is not near anything to do”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 January 2012

I got stuck booking this hotel thru an outside site. On learning the hotel selection I was disappointed as I knew it wasn't historic district. Obviously, I will not be using that booking service ever again. Still, I wanted to like the hotel in spite of the location and make the best of it.
Checking in went smoothly and when we arrived to our room we found it to be clean and nicely decorated and in good shape. My husband used the toilet and when he flushed the water came up over the bowl and onto floor. We called the operator and we were told someone was on the way. Engineering arrived quickly and told us it was fixed and that he'd send housekeeping to clean it up. Housekeeping came and wiped up the water with a towel and left. ummm, there was urine in the water...kind of yucky to just dry it and leave IMO. The toilet leaked the next day from the tank. We left a note to have it fixed and it seemed fine after that. Other than 1 dirty glass in our room, I found everything else to be clean.
As for the location, we spent $75 in taxis over our 2 day stay. You should only stay here if you are driving to your locations or if you dont mind waiting on shuttles which were $6 per person per day (fair price, just never saw the shuttles operating when we wanted one). If your main goal is to be in historic district, this is not the best choice.
