“Everything except the coffee”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 January 2012

Everything about this Comfort Suites was wonderful - except the coffee, which was uniformly and inexplicably dreadful. The bold, the regular, the decaf -- all undrinkable even with cream and sugar and moreso if you like it black as I do! So in reality I'd give this one 4-3/4 stars if that were possible.

Now, with that said, we were really, really happy with this Comfort Suites. The location suited us perfectly, the staff were friendly and helpful, the room we had (double with two queen beds) was large, clean and very comfortable. In addition to the beds there was a sofa and armchair, a coffee table, a mini-fridge and a microwave. The bathroom was spacious with the only drawback being that the shower head was so high that I could barely reach it on tiptoe to adjust it.

Charleston was a madhouse (one week before the Republican primary, a marathon, a bicycle race and Restaurant Week) and the place was full, but we never had the first problem with noise - that was very nice indeed. The rates were very reasonable. We spent two nights and were quite pleased with our choice (thanks TA reviewers).

Please note, if you are approaching from the south on Route 17, getting to the front drive can be a bit tricky since one cannot make a left directly into the facility. A left at the light before, then two immediate rights and the entrance is right there.

“"Life Is Good" Thank You Comfort Suites West of the Ashley”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 January 2012

We booked a park and ride for our Cruise out of Charleston. We had a group of 45 staying at The Comfort Suites West of the Ashley. From the time we first started working with Jing Butler, it was the perfect fit for our group. The information Jing gave us was 100% right. At check in Erica was the perfect welcoming host as she was friendly and funny, warm and caring. All of our rooms were maintained in an excellent manner. With the size of our group there was somthing for everyone, indoor swimming for the kids and workout equipment to help work off the excellent hot breakfast for the adults. Jing coordinated the park and ride for our large group to perfection. This is the only way to go. No worries and all the cars were perfectly safe upon our return. We are talking about cruisin out of Charleston again and a huge factor of that is returning to Comfort Suites West of the Ashley. They made us feel welcome and part of their family

“If you expect to park your car, beware!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 January 2012

We selected this hotel based on the positive TA reviews, and for the most part the hotel itself was fine. We booked a King Bed Suite. The rooms were nice and our reservations were accurate. Our biggest complaint was parking and the extremely poor attitude of the desk staff while attempting to address this problem. The parking lot was clearly too small for the number of rooms in this hotel. Cars were parked along the curbs and fire lanes, blocking fire hydrants and the main door turn about. When we arrived, we were among 5-10 cars circling the parking lot trying to find a way to park temporarily just to go in to speak with the staff. The desk staff, while seemingly apologetic, was impatient, annoyed, and unsympathetic. They told us to park illegally wherever we could find space. They assured us that our car would not be towed, but we were not willing to park illegally and not willing to take the risk of our car being hit by other cars. So they told us to park on the other side of Savannah Highway (busy, multi-lane highway), in the parking lot of a small church (which they referred to as their "overflow lot"). When asked if this parking situation happened often or if this was just an extremely busy Thursday night, we left with the impression that this happened every weekend. I think I was up most of the night worrying about whether or not our car was going to be burglarized. Happily it was not and we drove away as quickly as we could the next morning. I'm glad we had only reserved one night and I would not stay here again. If you don't need to park, you will probably enjoy your stay if you can get past the busy, stressed-out attitudes of the front desk. No discounts or other we offered for the inconvenience.

“Looks Aren't Everything”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 January 2012

We stayed one Saturday night in January, choosing this hotel on the basis of TA reviews. Mostly, we would agree with all the generally positive earlier reviews, but with one important difference.
The room was fresh, large and well furnished and so on. Everything was clean and in good shape. The separation of areas in the suite really worked, unlike some "suites" that are really just one big room with different furniture groupings. The breakfast selection was high average for Comfort chain hotels, with plenty of room and seating.
The only problem for us was noise. We had a king room on the top floor, facing Rt. 17 (Savannah Highway). The hotel is set inside a triangle of roadways, including access roads connecting Rt. 17 with I-526, with a traffic light right by the hotel's SW corner. We listened well into the busy Saturday night to revving motorcycles, car stereos, horns blowing and people yelling between cars as they waited for the light to change. This isn't unusual for a large urban intersection on a warm Saturday night, but the level of sound getting through the closed windows 5 floors up was surprisingly high. Then there were our neighbors in the adjoining suite, a family with three small children. We could hear them clearly through the wall, almost able to follow the conversation. It was not a major problem, but about what you'd expect in a lesser motel and dissapointing in a hotel as otherwise good as this one. The air unit did not allow running a fan, which can provide white noise in a noisy room.
If we stayed here again, it would only be with earplugs handy, just in case. We would choose a room facing the parking lot, as the nearest roadway is a bit farther away on that side.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms facing Rt 17 if you want quiet.
