“Location, Location, Location”

We stayed in a courtyard view room with king bed. No kids on this trip. Smaller room, but 10 foot ceilings, nice furnishings, hardwood floors, comfortable bed, nice linens, good pillows and plenty of hot water. The best part was the complimentary breakfast delivered to your room in the morning after filling out an order form the night before and hanging it on your door -- easy enough and nice touch to have breakfast in bed!

A quick look at google maps shows the location couldn't be better with the market, shops, restaurants, and all of Charleston charm right outside the door. Close to waterfront and carriage rides. Easy walk to Battery area. Parking area directly behind building couldn't be closer, but costs $12 per day so factor it in the hotel rate. I got a better rate booking online then the rate quote from calling the hotel directly. I love Charleston and highly recommend this hotel to couples looking for a nice place to stay in a great location.

“Great place to Stay!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 January 2012

I frequently travel to Charleston and have stayed at this hotel . The thought of staying anywhere else never crosses my mind. They have friendly staff, there's a wine and cheese tasting every weekday from 5 - 7, and their restaurant is great.

Room Tip: All rooms are great!

“The charm will keep us coming year after year”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 January 2012

After many years of visiting Charleston, we have stayed at many places. My husband and I make this trip annually for my birthday and have finally found the place to come back to every year. It has a special charm that captures the feel of old Charleston! The rooms were beautifully decorated with a historical feel but with all the modern amenities necessary to meet our needs. The fireplace was a real bonus! The complimentary breakfast was incredible with a lot of variety. You could choose a healthy breakfast for a healthy lifestyle or the delectable southern style for the soul and could be enjoyed in the comfort of your room or in the courtyard. There was also a wine and cheese reception most evenings also in the courtyard. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable and was able to recommend some wonderful places for lunch or dinner based on our preferences. They were helpful and accommodating in meeting all our needs. The location couldn't be more perfect so we parked our car and walked everywhere. From start to finish, from check in to checkout, never once did we question our choice and will never have to again! Oh, and the rates were very reasonable!

“Nice Experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 December 2011

My wife and I stayed here on Christmas Eve, Christmas day and the day after. On this trip we were traveling with our two small yorkies and this is one of eight within the historic section of Charleston that offers a limited number of pet friendly rooms. The hotel is very quaint and charming with a very historic look and feel.

The room
To my surprise, our room was large, and it was located in the rear carriage house. It was clean, on the ground floor near the rear court yard, had outside access, hardwood floors, a king bed, tall ceilings and period appropriate furnishings. It was nice and felt homey.

Freebies
The Inn offers a number complimentary items and services including a continental breakfast, a wine and cheese reception daily, and sherry available throughout the evening (in the lobby). In-room Wi-Fi access and a daily newspaper delivered to your room are free as well. These types of freebies appear to be common in area.

Style
This is not your typical cookie cutter style Marriot or Sheraton. It reminds me more of a European style of inn or hotel or something you might find in the French quarter in New Orleans or in a town in Maine, Vermont, etc. It was built in the mid 1800s and retains its historic charm while offering modern conveniences.

Service
Things were a bit quiet and they offered limited Christmas day service, but we understood and were very happy with the service we received. All of the hotel staff we came in contact with were very helpful and gracious. I give them extra points on the service because I am sure most of them would have rather been with family during Christmas.

Location
I don’t see how it can be better. Everything is close and convenient. Whether you are into shopping or historic sightseeing, you are no more than a few blocks away - very short walking distances. There was no need to drive anywhere.

Rates
They adjust rates seasonally and even with the pet fee, the rate was reasonable. Some of the other local Inns charge a high premium for pet friendly rooms. For example, one hotel charges an extra $100 for pet stays and another only allows pets in its largest most expensive suites. After doing the math, it would have cost between 3 and 4 times as much to stay in some of the other local pet friendly hotels. The only negative in terms of cost was the parking. Some of the other hotels/Inns in the area DO offer free parking, this one does NOT. I assume it is a city maintained lot behind the hotel. It is very convenient and easy but I never moved my car and it made no sense that I had to pay $12 a day for parking just to stay in a hotel. The hotel should eat or absorb that cost – (cost of doing business, or adding value, or customer service, or…). I would rather give up the free breakfast than pay that much for my car to sit in a lot.

Value
You get good value with this hotel because of its combination of charm, room size, great location, good service, freebies and seasonal rate adjustments.

We are traveling back to Charleston in May (w/o the dogs) and will consider staying here again. If the Kings Courtyard did not have the expensive parking fee, I would not waste the time shopping around, but it is a sticking point for me. It hurts the value a bit and becomes more of a customer service issue for us. Be sure to factor in parking costs as you shop around. Everything else is great!
