“Anniversary gathering”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

We made the Rutledge House the center piece of a 50th Wedding Anniversary celebration with 20 friends and relatives, and could not have been happier. Kathy and her staff coordinated our weekend stay including restaurant contacts, a welcome reception, airport transportation, and a tour of the city. We're convinced we couldn't have made a better choice. The excellent location, beautiful rooms, great ambience, and friendly service made for a very special event -- In short, our guests were "blown away".

“Too nice to leave”

when we saw how beautiful the Inn was, we quickly added another night to our stay. The furnishings are beautiful and the place is spotless. The staff could not do enough and Patrice took care of all our reservations and her recommendations were perfect. she told us what to see and were to eat. Her enthusiasm was so genuine. The location is great, walked to restaurants and the city is beautiful.

Room Tip: They all looked beautiful

“Good location, but very overpriced”

We stopped for one night in Charleston with our dog. We had one of the dog-friendly rooms in the carriage house. The room was fine, but not even close to being worth the price. Not sure how much the non pet-friendly rooms cost, but I hope its not as much as we paid for ours. The room wasn't exactly uncomfortable, but it was small seemed a bit dreary.

The inn is a neat historic building, but it doesn't appear to have been maintained all that well. The whole place just seems a bit run down. Breakfast was also a disappointment. It was fine as far as included breakfasts go, but I expected more given price to stay here.

The staff was all very friendly, and we loved the location- close walk to a lot of great parts of town, but not in the middle of the hustle and bustle.

They do charge a pet fee, which they failed to mention when I booked the room. But when I told them I was unaware of the fee, they removed the charge, which was nice.

Overall, I just don't understand why this place is so expensive. For the price of the room, plus the price of parking (we avoided this charge by parking on the street), and the pet fee, you could stay in a suite at Wentworth Mansion (same ownership, I believe), which we had done a week earlier and found to be really top notch. And there appear to be a lot more reasonably priced options very nearby.

I would not recommend staying here.

Room Tip: First floor carriage house room was small and not too inviting.

Thank you for the nice comments on the staff and noting the convenient location. We take great pride in constantly maintaining this historic building to meet our guests expectations as well as AAA Four Diamond standards. I apologize that you felt the price was too high. The price varies as to the time of the year and you stayed in peak time at New Years.

“18th Century Charm”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 December 2011

Perfect examples of southern graciousness and charm are in this city. An ideal place to stay is the John Rutledge Inn. This is perfectly located close to everything, but not directly on the main traffic streets, so it is quieter. The Inn is gorgeous, the rooms are large, the bathrooms are heavenly, and the wonderful period touches like large four poster beds, fireplaces in the bedrooms, etc are a dream.

“A very pleasant stay....”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 December 2011

My friend and I stayed in one of the coach houses, we were slightly disappointed we were not in the main house but suspected our twin bed request was the reason for this. We particularly enjoyed the daily afternoon tea which was an an added bonus, served either on the verandah or in the 'ball room'.....which was really a drawing room.

Room Tip: Perhaps request a room in the main house and not on the ground floor.
