“Great location; older hotel but good value.”

We stayed there so I could do a campus visit at the University of South Carolina. It's right across the bridge, a very short drive from campus; we could have walked it if we wanted to. The location is great. Not once did I feel unsafe. The building was well lit outside. The pool was not clean, but it was April, so it may have been too early to swim anyway. The bathroom was a bit small as was the room, but we only paid like $50 a night, so it was a great deal, and the size of the room and bathroom was not that big of a deal. The staff was nice; anything we needed, we could get from them like extra towels, extra coffee, etc. The room was older as was the bathroom, so there was wear and tear, but overall, it was a good experience, and I would definitely stay there again.

“If you only want 1 room, can avoid the staff, & aren't a coffee drinker, great for the price”

I read all of the reviews and decided to give this place a try. I wouldn't give a hotel low stars just for being out dated, and that seemed to be the largest complaint. I also understand that you get what you pay for.

Pros: Cost, you definetely get what you paid for, our room was clean, even if it was older, no roaches or bad small that I read aobut in other reviews. Upon first inspection I was very pleased with the hotel for the price. The location is also really good relative to the price.

Cons: I saw the reviews where the staff was rude, but I always take that judgement with a grain of salt. I wish I hadn't, if I had no interaction with the front desk staff at all, this hotel would have received 4-5 stars from me. The front desk step was ridiculously incompetent. I booked one room online and paid the 12.50 service fee to use the online service (never do that, just call the hotel)- so when I went to book a second room the day I arrived because I had additional people traveling with me they were going to charge me more for that room. I asked why, maybe I got an online discount or it was a higher rate the day of....no, she had the nerve to tell me that they lost a lot of money on the rooms booked over the internet and they wanted to recover some of that money on the 2nd room I was reserving. How is it my fault you pay the internet company a commission and how dare you penalize me becuase of it and then have the nerve to tell me about it. It blew my mind and once she realized I wasn't going to fall for that, I did get a discount on the second room.

Also, when booking the room they tell you there is a coffee maker in all of the rooms. This is true, but beware, never assume that means there is coffee. We had a coffe maker, but no coffee. I went to the front desk and asked for some coffee - she told me they were out. How can a hotel be out of coffee? And, if you can't have coffee in the rooms you should have a very large carafe in the front lobby for the guests that aren't able to make coffee in their rooms.

I gave this hotel 1 star for service and it was enough to give them an overall rating of 1 out of 5 stars.

“old and out dated”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 November 2009

We we checked in the front desk clerk was very rude to us telling me that my reservation was cancelled because i didn't check in the night before even though it was in the early morning I had been traveling all night on the road and didn't appreciate hearing this he was also very rude when we ask about checking out and the time. The room was very smelly and old the bed was hard as a rock and the pillows were very thin and uncomfortable the bathroom looked like it hadn't been cleaned in weeks and there was no soap or shampoo available. The tub need to be refinished and the curtain changed there was also an old chair in the room that looked like it had been in a fire. The smoke detected kept going and i had to take the battery out. Overall my stay was not that great and i wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone that I know.

“Pleasant surprise”

I needed a place to stay that allowed pets. I was traveling to Columbia for an agility trial with my dachshund. I initially was drawn to this hotel because it allowed pets and had a wooded area to walk them. I read the reviews and continued to search for a place to stay. For some reason I kept coming back to Riverside Inn. I chose not to rely on the negative reviews....surely it could not be that bad. I called and spoke with someone at the front desk, they answered my questions and I felt comfortable staying there.
Upon arrival, I was pleasantly surprised...no mold or mildew in the bathroom...it was very clean....no nasty sheets...they were clean....the room was plain, but clean. The AC worked like a charm. I got a room away from foot traffic (just like I requested). I never felt unsafe. The wooded area was one block away, no problem crossing the street. It has paved and bricked paths and a stream. A perfect place for dog walking.
I don't know why people felt this was a bad place to stay. I would recommend it to family and friends if they just needed a place to stay.

First saw the Inn online . The pictures looked wonderful . Called and made our reservation by phone . When we got there the pool looked like green sludge . ( I know it is off season but it did not need to look like this . Checked in at the front desk . The person checking us in talked on and on about cockroaches . Saying they were every where she went . I asked if they were here she said no but were everywhere she went . We went to our room and upon entering the housekeeper was sitting on our toilet doing business ( and I dont mean cleaning business . The bathroom door partialy open as we walked in . She finished up said sorry and walked out . Never even cleaned up after herself . We went to the front desk and told them what happened . They said they were sorry and these things happen . We were given another room . Went to that one . It smelled and felt damp . Very small tub and in order to wash my hair I basicly had to do a backbend to get under the shower head . There was no way I was putting my head on those pillows so we now went to walmart and bought new pillows and pillow cases and air freshner . We had to spend more money just to stay in this room . Very very disappointed and will not go back .
