“No Way to Treat Guests”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 May 2010

After much research, planning and Trip Advisor Review reading for our one and only Beaufort visit, I selected the Old Point Inn - and The Old World Room specifically - as the preferred choice. Six weeks prior to arrival I phoned and spoke with Owner Paul to consider various dates for that Room to be available. He confirmed our Reservation for May 17th. At that time I also indicated that we planned to be there around 1PM and he said to call if that time was changing so that they could plan to be there. Three days prior to arriving, I called to re-confirm and indicated to Owner Julie that we should be there between Noon and 1PM. She said " we should be there. " After arriving shortly after Noon we waited in the rain on their porch until she came at 12:45. After taking my CreditCard and running the charge she said she would show us to The Sultan's Room. I was taken aback since The Old World had been booked. She said " oh sorry, didn't my husband call to tell you he had moved you ? " When I said No and that I had just called a few days before and this was not mentioned, she said they had been able to rent the Old World room for four consecutive nights, but had moved us into the other most expensive in the Inn. I was very disappointed and said I would have changed dates had I known about the switch since we are retired ad flexible. She did apologize for him, said she would speak with him and that perhaps we could stay in the Old World Room for one night free on our next visit. She did not offer to adjust the rate charged. Upon check-out, this issue had not been discussed. There was no apology from Paul who said goodbye, and no other offer of compensation. I decided to let them bring it up since I did not want to appear to be a complainer. But it certainly appeared that they were willing to toss us out of our reserved room in order to facilitate a later reservation for more money.
Perhaps this bitterness on my part clouded our visit, but we have stayed in countless B&Bs in many countries and have some experience with them. The breakfast was also a disappointment. There was nothing " Gourmet " about scrambled eggs, tough bacon, some berries, grits and biscuits. We had never planned a return to Beaufort, but would stay somewhere else if we did. Other aspects of the Inn were fine ( See my Ratings ) but a rather indifferent way to treat guests.......

“This is the most gracious, beautifully-located inn I've ever stayed in.”

My family and I visit Beaufort regularly to see my father, and the Old Point Inn is by far the nicest of the inns in town, or indeed any town. The small inn is located in Beaufort's handsome historic district, a walk to downtown, and I've stayed there easily a dozen times, most recently last weekend. While there, I enjoy the Michau's gracious hospitality, comfortable, well-appointed rooms (I've tried them all) and delicious breakfasts on the porch overlooking the Beaufort River in nice weather, in the cozy dining room when it's cold. Free wi-fi, a cocktail reception for guests every evening and lots of good tips of what to do and where to eat--what's not to like. Go, but don't tell too many of your friends!

“Lovely Location”

I agree with the review of May 14th. The place lacks warmth. That being said, it is by far the best location on Beaufort; it is very clean, quiet, beautiful and well priced. If you ask, they have loaner bikes and beach chairs--but you do need to ask, and I think this is part of that distant feeling that the previous reviewer describes. Wifi was intermittent--no printer available for guests. Parking is on the street--easy and free. Considering the alternatives--the beautiful porches of the Rhett House overlook the Best Western parking lot; the beautiful porches of Cuthbert House don't connect directly to the intercoastal waterway as the pictures suggest (they overlook a busy road); the porch at North Street needs a coat of paint--Old Point does look like the pictures and is the best in Beaufort. Beaufort itself is easily "worth" three days. Lots to do and good food too.

“Old Point Inn was ok, nothing to either avoid or write home about.”

We stayed with friends at the Old Point Inn. The location was terrific, the breakfast was very good, and the decor, rooms and especially outdoor porches were fine. However, there was a distinct lack of warmth compared to almost every other bed and breakfast at which I have stayed. Service and advice about Beaufort were fine, but not enthusiastic-especially the latter. Beaufort is lovely; I would not hesitate to stay here again if necessary, but I'm sure there are warmer places in town.

“A meticulously maintained, wonderfully furnished Inn whose owners personally create a warm and welcoming environment”

For us, the outstanding feature of the Old Point Inn was the warm welcome and the personal hospitality delivered by the owners Paul and Julie Michau. Upon our too-early arrival at the Inn, we were invited by Julie to leave our luggage there; and then, learning of our afternoon plans, she provided us with maps, directions, en-route restaurant information and beach chairs to expedite our trip to Hunting Island State Park. This was just the beginning of the generous hospitality we experienced throughout our stay.

Though convenient to everything — an easy walk to the waterfront, historic The Point neighborhood, and restaurants — the Old Point Inn is located on a lovely, quiet street of downtown. The 1890s Victorian is well kept and beautifully landscaped, while the distinctive rooms each offer a peak at the many world wide travels of the owners. We stayed in the Safari room, which contained many fine African artifacts. The very spacious bed was firm and comfortable. The beautifully shaded porches provide a perfect setting for conversation and relaxation.

From the delicious breakfasts, the convivial wine on the porch, the comfort of our room, to the abundant hospitality, we have nothing but high praise for the Old Point Inn.
