After much research, planning and Trip Advisor Review reading for our one and only Beaufort visit, I selected the Old Point Inn - and The Old World Room specifically - as the preferred choice. Six weeks prior to arrival I phoned and spoke with Owner Paul to consider various dates for that Room to be available. He confirmed our Reservation for May 17th. At that time I also indicated that we planned to be there around 1PM and he said to call if that time was changing so that they could plan to be there. Three days prior to arriving, I called to re-confirm and indicated to Owner Julie that we should be there between Noon and 1PM. She said " we should be there. " After arriving shortly after Noon we waited in the rain on their porch until she came at 12:45. After taking my CreditCard and running the charge she said she would show us to The Sultan's Room. I was taken aback since The Old World had been booked. She said " oh sorry, didn't my husband call to tell you he had moved you ? " When I said No and that I had just called a few days before and this was not mentioned, she said they had been able to rent the Old World room for four consecutive nights, but had moved us into the other most expensive in the Inn. I was very disappointed and said I would have changed dates had I known about the switch since we are retired ad flexible. She did apologize for him, said she would speak with him and that perhaps we could stay in the Old World Room for one night free on our next visit. She did not offer to adjust the rate charged. Upon check-out, this issue had not been discussed. There was no apology from Paul who said goodbye, and no other offer of compensation. I decided to let them bring it up since I did not want to appear to be a complainer. But it certainly appeared that they were willing to toss us out of our reserved room in order to facilitate a later reservation for more money.
Perhaps this bitterness on my part clouded our visit, but we have stayed in countless B&Bs in many countries and have some experience with them. The breakfast was also a disappointment. There was nothing " Gourmet " about scrambled eggs, tough bacon, some berries, grits and biscuits. We had never planned a return to Beaufort, but would stay somewhere else if we did. Other aspects of the Inn were fine ( See my Ratings ) but a rather indifferent way to treat guests.......
