We have family in the Newport area and are always looking for reasonably priced, clean, well-maintained, dog friendly places to stay. My son recommended the Howard Johnson on Rte 138 and we were extremely pleased with our stay. Our room was fresh and clean. We stayed in a room specified for dogs and you would never know that a dog had been there before. The mattreeses were firm and solid. Everything worked. There is a dog walking area right behind the hotel. There were many people at the hotel but we did not here any loud noise and all was very quiet after 10:45. Staff were helpful and friendly. The soda machine is $1.50, cheaper than the CVS down the street and they also sell small containers of ben and jerry's ice cream for late night snacking. Plenty of stores right in the area. You can walk to the Christmas Tree Shop if you want to buy "things you don't really need real cheap". Definitely will stay there again.

The orange roof may bring back memories of the 60's and 70's but it is the only thing old fashioned about this HoJo's. As with most hotels, our experience started and finished at the front desk. The staff was friendly, helpful and really made you want to come back again (and we will). The rooms are very clean, comfortable and nicely furnished including a micro fridge and flat panel television set. The indoor pool and spa were a great way to finish off a day of sightseeing.. We found the warm towels there an especially nice touch. Although breakfast is not included there are lots of convenient choices nearby. We chose this hotel after reading other tripadvisor reviews and found them all to be accurate including the rates mentioned. Our stay was really pleasant and a great value.

Stayed here Martin Luther King weekend, its my third or fouth time. It's on a busy road and close to everything. Newport is right around the corner and great beaches. The pool was nice, hot tub a little small. Applebees is conected to hotel, so very handy. Rooms are large and comfy . Hotel is pet friendly.

This is the best kept secret in Middletown. I read all the positive reviews prior to my weekend and it's all true. I booked a smoking room online and when we got there the very very nice woman that checked us in (i'm so sorry I didn't get her name) stated that she didn't have one so she gave us 15 percent off of a very resonable price as it was. No problem. If I had known they had balconys I would'nt have even bothered booking a smoking room so it worked out perfect.
The room was quite large and spotless!!!! The beds were comfortable. They have a great indoor pool and hot tub that we took advantage of.
I mostly stay in middletown when I visit Newport since it's much cheaper and a quick 5 minute drive to downtown, however, I have to say this is the BEST place I have ever stayed at...including the times I stayed in downtown Newport at 4 times the price. I will never stay any where else.
The only suggestion I would have is to try to get a room in the back only because it's less traffic and probably quieter. It was very quiet.
