“Great experience at the Sea Whale”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 October 2011

We stayed here for two nights and were very pleased. The rooms were exceptionally clean and attractive, and featured sliding glass doors and a deck with great views of Easton's Pond, looking over toward Newport. It was obvious the owners take pride in the place. It's in a great location, within walking distance of Newport and the start of the Cliff Walk; most of the town is within easy driving distance. The owners were friendly and helpful, even to the point of volunteering their cell phone in the event of problems. There were none; all of us would have been happy to stay here much longer. Maybe we will again sometime.

The owners are great...friendly, professional and ready to help. Cool motel with a great view & easy access to all that Newport has to offer.

“Nice hotel with waterview”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 September 2011

The property was well cared for and clean. If you turn right out of the driveway there is a gorgeous beach not far away. Keep going and you'll get to downtown in a few minutes. I liked the price and location. The deck with water view was nice. The furnishings were older but in good shape. I thought the room was small but fine for 2 adults. If we brought the kids it would have been too tight. The bed was comfy. Bathroom was clean but cramped with no place to put anything. Really liked the dispenser in the shower. I'm a very light sleeper and I had a problem with noise. Its right next to a very busy road and the front door wasn't air tight. I could hear traffic all night long. Also, the wind blew into the spaces under the roof and lifted up the ceiling boards which created a noise each time the wind blew hard. Then the AC unit - it sounded like a jet engine but if we left it off it got very stuffy in the room. I would not book here again.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. This is really the only way we can know what changes, adjustments or additions should be made. We did notice that your review was rather "mixed" and again, thank you for your initial compliments and your honesty. While we are sorry you were not happy with some aspects of our motel, we are sort of confused as to why we did not hear of this during your stay, or even at check-out, especially since you were here more than one night. Be that as it may, all rooms here at the Sea Whale are very different in many ways. First, it is an older Mom and Pop Motel and we are updating constantly in one capacity or another, i.e., furniture, mattresses, linens, solar, "green" roof, etc. We would like all of our past and future guests to know that all the rooms, deck and garden level, have drop-ceilings and they are "standard size motel rooms". They are not the size of a mini-suite. Please refer to pictures on our website for bathroom and bedroom areas. We also agree that the rooms are fine for 2 people, but of course, as you said, it can get pretty crowded if 4 people were to stay, especially since that obviously means more luggage and personal items in the room. The deck level has 2 means of entry and there is a lock plus a deadbolt on the roadside door which is the door you speak of. The door must be PUSHED in and the bolt TURNED for it to catch or you can definitely hear outside noise, especially with the traffic of the Newport Boat Show in town, or any other major festivity that brings heavy traffic to Newport. Our street, 138A / Aquidneck Ave. turns into Memorial Blvd., which is the Gateway to the City of Newport. There is an owner's quarters at the motel and our bedroom is on that same side of the building where the road is and that side is heavily insulated. Could it be possible that your deadbold did not catch or maybe as you explained, you are a "very light sleeper", to use your words. Since we could be wrong, we have put a new gasket on the door in the room you were staying in (we can narrow our guests down pretty much) and checked all the others. We also checked the ceiling tiles and noticed a few more tiles that needed more clips to hold them down in that particular room as some had come loose (there are special fasteners for drop-ceilings so this sort of thing doesn't happen). Unfortunately, being so close to the ocean, once in awhile we get high winds and the ceiling tiles can move, as you said, which is why we add more fasteners to the deck level tiles. The deck level has cross-ventilation. Next... Five years ago, we added shelves to all the bathrooms but agree with you that we wish we had more space so we could add more shelves to hold more personal items actually in the bathroom (we do not want to create a hazardous area for a standard size bathroom). We will be adding more hooks for bathrobes, etc. this year. Many of your complaints could have been addressed immediately simply by moving you to another room, had we known, even after the first night you were here. There are a few standard "checks" that I do myself which is that the tv remotes work, the toilets flush, all locks on all doors work and that the air conditioners are functioning properly (without "unusual" noise). I did however, notice a sort of hum in your A/C after your check-out. I wish I was made aware of it sooner -- I do so appreciate it when guests let me know of this ahead of time, as we store extras of everything that we have in our rooms for just this sort of problem, including air conditioners and refrigerators. Perhaps it could have been a simple matter of changing the A/C while you were out to lunch or dinner??? Also, we live here and ALL phone lines are on 24 hours, including the in-house office number (simply dial 100) which rings into our home. If there is a problem during the middle of the night, you can actually ring the bell and we WILL answer the door, even though the office check-in area may be closed. We would like all past guests that may be staying with us again, and all future guests that have never been to the Sea Whale, to know that we appreciate you advising us of a problem you may have with your room on a timely basis so that we are given the opportunity to correct what you feel is not quite right, proper or satisfactory and therefore, a more enjoyable stay and a good night's sleep for you. Perhaps the garden level is better for some, as there is only one means of entry which is on the water side (but of course, you would not get the same waterview as you do from the deck level). Thank you for taking the time to write the review and we're sorry you did not totally enjoy your stay.

“we loved it”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 August 2011

having never been to Newport Rhode Island and not sure where to stay, I picked the Sea Whale since it didn't seem to far from Newport and looking for a balcony to sit outside and enjoy the weather ( we had beautiful weather). I definitely have OCD so I kept checking reviews on trip adivisor on this motel and was not disappointed the room was immaculate bathroom was spotless and we had arrived a little early and the room was not ready but Teri the owner went and helped her staff so we could get in our room! thank you Terri. short walk to the beach .

“Great Place to stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 August 2011

We just came back from Newport … we spent the weekend over there and we staid at See Whale Hotel.

No complains so far.

Great location, walking distance to the beach and not so far from the cliff as well.
Room was clean, and was cleaned every day, owners super, super, nice. We arrived very late on Friday night, around 10:30 P.M. and Terri (the owner) waited for us just to give us the key and give us information about the town.

The only thing I’m confused about is the price … I did not know Newport is such an expensive place to stay …we paid $200/night and it was one of the cheapest we could find in town. It is a decent price comparing to the others but high comparing to what you get in return – keep in mind this is not a fancy hotel … at all.
