The resort is in Jamestown, which is just across the Pell Bridge from Newport. We had a challenge actually *finding* the resort, but once we did, everything went smoothly. (You'll notice that RI doesn't really feel that road signs are too important, and the resort was down this long residential road that didn't look like it was leading to anywhere.)
Check-in was very easy and informal, but our room wasn't ready until a little after the 4:00 PM check-in time. They let us in the room while they were still cleaning, though, so we could get settled to enjoy the rest of our first day. We were two couples who booked a two-bedroom unit and were a bit frightened when we went upstairs and found only one bedroom! We were apparently in the only unit that had one bedroom upstairs and one bedroom downstairs. Whew! Disaster averted. It was actually kind of nice having the bedrooms on different floors because it gave each couple more privacy. The two-bedroom unit was VERY spacious and let in a lot of natural light. On one side of the unit, we had a view of the water, on the other, a view of the Newport Pell Bridge. The views of the Pell Bridge from the resort were spectacular. It is literally "right there." We could walk down on the rocks for some great photo opportunities.
The bedrooms were very large. There was even space for a chair and lamp (with plenty of space left over), which made for a great reading spot in the morning with the sun streaming in! There was more than enough space and storage in both the bedrooms and bathrooms (I only wish my house had as much!). Everything was also clean and in working order. A special treat was finding the "heat" function in the bathrooms. It made for a most enjoyable showering experience so you didn't have to step out into the cold air.
We had a great week at Newport Overlook. We drove into downtown Jamestown several times -- it has a friendly, small town feel to it. You can grab a quick breakfast or lunch or sit for a nice, relaxing dinner. The views of the Newport Bridge and Jamestown harbor from the downtown area are magnificent. When going into Newport, just remember that there's a $4 toll EACH time you cross the bridge. Don't forget anything back in your room!
