“Great views & location; Very spacious!”

The resort is in Jamestown, which is just across the Pell Bridge from Newport. We had a challenge actually *finding* the resort, but once we did, everything went smoothly. (You'll notice that RI doesn't really feel that road signs are too important, and the resort was down this long residential road that didn't look like it was leading to anywhere.)

Check-in was very easy and informal, but our room wasn't ready until a little after the 4:00 PM check-in time. They let us in the room while they were still cleaning, though, so we could get settled to enjoy the rest of our first day. We were two couples who booked a two-bedroom unit and were a bit frightened when we went upstairs and found only one bedroom! We were apparently in the only unit that had one bedroom upstairs and one bedroom downstairs. Whew! Disaster averted. It was actually kind of nice having the bedrooms on different floors because it gave each couple more privacy. The two-bedroom unit was VERY spacious and let in a lot of natural light. On one side of the unit, we had a view of the water, on the other, a view of the Newport Pell Bridge. The views of the Pell Bridge from the resort were spectacular. It is literally "right there." We could walk down on the rocks for some great photo opportunities.

The bedrooms were very large. There was even space for a chair and lamp (with plenty of space left over), which made for a great reading spot in the morning with the sun streaming in! There was more than enough space and storage in both the bedrooms and bathrooms (I only wish my house had as much!). Everything was also clean and in working order. A special treat was finding the "heat" function in the bathrooms. It made for a most enjoyable showering experience so you didn't have to step out into the cold air.

We had a great week at Newport Overlook. We drove into downtown Jamestown several times -- it has a friendly, small town feel to it. You can grab a quick breakfast or lunch or sit for a nice, relaxing dinner. The views of the Newport Bridge and Jamestown harbor from the downtown area are magnificent. When going into Newport, just remember that there's a $4 toll EACH time you cross the bridge. Don't forget anything back in your room!

“Very pleasant stay in Jamestown”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 March 2010

My husband and I recently swapped our Puerto Vallarta timeshare for a 5-day stay at the Wyndham Newport Overlook (were not able to remain full 7 days). In general, this is a pretty nice property and overall we had a very pleasant stay in Jamestown.

My husband and I swapped this facility to visit numerous family members each day who live all throughout Rhode Island. For starters, the location of this property is excellent because it allows quick and immediate access to Rte. 138 East & West, the main road in and out of Jamestown and the main road to Interstate 95 and RI Rte 4. Because I was born and raised in RI and I know Jamestown very well, check-in was quick, easy and smooth. Staff was very friendly, as they were taking time with the check-in before us and after us, explaining various local sites, attractions, amenities, etc.

I remember when this property was built and sold as condominiums, probably back in the late '70's early '80's. While showing some wear 'n tear, the units (ours was #16, right on the water) were all recently updated, the kitchens totally renovated. As others have stated, our 2 bedroom was massive, probably close to 1400-1600 sq feet. Our unit had three bathrooms, two bedrooms (one with a king-sized bed, one with two twins plus a sleeper couch), many closets, a fully-equipped kitchen, a very small but adequate washer/dryer, heat/AC controls, ample lighting, etc.

The weather varied from 70 degrees during the day to 27 degrees at night but we managed to comfortably heat/cool our unit with the single zone controls. There are new flat screen televisions in all bedrooms and the living room. Dining room table is huge. Husband and I mostly used the little breakfast bar/nook...a nice touch. Kitchen was fully equipped with large stove & fridge, microwave, coffee maker, toaster, all utensils, etc. You can request a gas grill for grilling fresh fish...they will deliver the grill right to your door!

Our location was superb because we were right on Narragansett Bay, just steps from the rocky shore and waters. The units are REALLY private condominium type units, as ours had a slider door leading out to a concrete patio that was right on the Bay. Upper level had sliders leading out to a small balcony, also overlooking the Bay. Patio and balcony had chairs and a lounger for sunning plus a table. The view of the Pell (Newport) Bridge was great...no traffic noise at all.

Our neighbors were all nice. My husband and I zipped into Newport one night to meet friends for dinner...it took about 5 minutes door-to-door over the Newport Bridge...a $4.00 toll EACH WAY. We shopped at local grocery stores, ate at a few local restaurants, took rides all around South County and the immediate area...(Galilee, Point Judith, Narragansett and Beavertail Lighthouse are not to be missed). There is ample parking right outside the door of each unit...well lit parking lot, too!

Overall, my husband and I had a very nice stay and enjoyed our visits with family. The only downside to the units, in my opinion, is some of the furniture, which I found to be very uncomfortable. One of our neighbors, an owner at this property stated that "the furniture was all just replaced a few years back." However, I think due to the wear 'n tear and the constant sun beating into the units, the furniture was somewhat faded and the seat cushions, bed mattress, couch cushions, etc were pretty flat and uncomfortable...ditto for the pillows! I plopped into an arm chair one night and nearly bruised my tailbone! But...no biggie! I managed to find a chair that worked!

Other than the wear 'n tear on the furniture, my only other minor grievance is that there is absolutely no computer access, no wi-fi anywhere on or near the property. I tried to "jump off" the wi-fi at the sister property, The Bay Voyage Inn but was unable to do so. Couldn't check emails and such 'til we got to Logan Airport in Boston on Day 5. But no biggie.

Given the location, the overall unit amenities, the cost, the friendliness of everyone, the tranquility and beauty of Jamestown, the spaciousness of the units and the basic comforts, I would definitely recommend this property without hesitation to all!

“Great location and wonderful staff”

The Newport Overlook is bay front next to the Pell Bridge in Jamestown. Check in was quick and we were given the corner unit. Great view!! Our unit has two bedrooms and two full baths upstairs. There was a third bathroom downstairs by the front entrance.
The units on the outside show some weathering but the inside of our unit was well kept. The carpet & drapery looked pretty new. The master bedroom has a balcony. There is a BBQ, table and chairs just outside the patio downstairs. There is also washer and dryer in the unit.
Their sister property, Bay Voyage Inn, is located close by and they offer 24 hour coffee and muffins in the morning. The front desk there is open 24 hours to service both properties. All staff we met during our stay were very helpful and friendly. We got discount coupons to location winery, restaurants and attractions, including the mansions at Newport. Wireless internet is available.
We bought lobsters at the Newport Bowen pier (Aquidneck Lobster Co). It was fun picking your own lobsters.
If you want to plan some day trips during your stay, Boston, Mystic Seaport & Village, Foxwoods casinos, Providence, Narragansett are not too far away. Newport mansions are a must-see. Also do the cliff walk and the 10-mile drive.....
There is so much to do in the area and it is wonderful to get back to the unit to relax and enjoy the bay front view at the end of the day!

“Wonderful!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 April 2009

A very roomy townhouse with all the comforts of home. We loved the location and all the amenities! Our townhouse had a fireplace in the living room (which created great atmosphere for our lobster dinners when we used those Duralogs), the corner unit had a great view, a large patio with grill and table for outdoor dining, large bathrooms, 2 floors of space, ample kitchen and appliances, pool with bridge view, plus the water views of Narragansett Sound.

We ate at the townhouse a lot, using the full kitchen to cook. We didn't go out to dinner in Newport at all, so we might have missed some great places. But we found lobsters and clams at the state piers for so cheap (about $5 a piece or $1.70 a pound for clams) so why go out to eat??? We cooked seafood at the townhouse and had our choice of cold micro-brewed beer, it was a perfect gastronomic week on vacation!

An older resort directly on the Sound, but not tired. I highly recommend it! The living room is the most updated with lots of comfortable furniture. The king size bed was comfortable, the bathrooms were probably the oldest, but the master bath was very large and easy to use, a first floor guest room with 2 beds and bath, plus washer and dryer. It was all clean and we didn't notice anything that really needed to be repaired, I had no complaints at all. (No bugs in New England is a great plus!. That's a big thing I look for in notes from travelers, I don't want to bring anything home with me, so if you ever see any, write it in your reviews please.)

The Overlook was super convenient to get over to Newport via the Jamestown Bridge (You can buy tokens at 10 for $10 rather than paying $2 each trip). We had a great time exploring the area all around Newport, Jamestown and into the countryside of Rhode Island. Rhode Island is really lovely, relaxing and laid-back. There are great drives all aroudn the state. Exploring the New England homes or wineries are great ways to spend the day. One must is the Newport Storm Brewery. We went for their Friday night happy hour Tour and had a great time! You get four full pints of beer to sample, plus you get to keep the pint glass. We will definitely do that again. It was a delicious and fun experience. If you're into sailing or boating, Newport is an obvious choice for many activities around the sport.

I often think of this trip, the relaxing Overlook resort, the wonderful food of R.I. and hope to go back for sure!!!!
