creaky bed, lack of water, house, hill, all handled eslsewhree, had shades - significantly lower price - maintenance - not there long enough to eval service
Block Island is a great place, and the Appleyard is adequate, as long as you know what to expect. Basically accomodations at the Appleyard are spare bedrooms, each with a bathroom. There were two things that I found to be annoying, one was an extremely sqeaky king sized bed, and the other was the complete loss of waterpressure (no water to the shower) on a couple of occasions. Both times we lost the water, it was back in about 5 minutes, not sure why this happened, but I assume there just isn't enough water pressure in the house to accomodate multiple bathrooms, etc.
The house itself was well kept, basically what you would expect of an average house. As another reviewer noted, you are walking into their front door, their living area is seperated by simple wood/fabric dividers, but guest accomodations are upstairs, so this wasn't an issue for us. The house is maybe 1/4 mile from where you arrive on the ferry, but you should know that it is up a very steep hill, which wasn't a problem for us. As far as another reviewers complaint about lack of window coverings, we didn't find this to be the case at this point. There were roman shades in the windows, which was adequate for privacy.
Reservations are handled by a 3rd party, which worked out fine for us, I suppose this could be an inconvenience if you ran into issues. We only stayed for one night, so I can't really rate the service.
I can understand the frustration of the other reviwers given the prices they paid. Columbus Day weekend, being the tail end of the season, put the price well below $100 for us, which was well worth it in our opinion. Had I spend $200/night, I would not have been satisfied. If you care about the extras, this probably isn't the place for you, but if you're just looking for a clean and convenient (as long as you don't mind climbing a hill) place to stay, this could be a great fit if you can get a decent price. I would suggest that Appleyard for long-weekend type travel, I'm not sure I would want to stay here for a full week.
