“The AppleNightmare--avoid it”

DO NOT STAY HERE! i read the negative reviews here before I booked, but unfortunately, this was the only place that had space available for Labor Day. This is in NO WAY worth $229 + 13% tax/night. This is nothing more than an above average hostel. $50/night max is all it's worth.

I have only negative reviews about this property.

1) DON'T BE FOOLED! Even though this is a private house and may look and feel like a B&B, it is NOT. It is a room with a bed, fridge, bathroom, and TV. That's it. No Breakfast. The strong odor of food from the owner's kitchen that infiltrates guest rooms is NOT FOR YOU.

2) NO SERVICE WHATSOEVER. With the exception of dropping off new towels on 1 day of my 3-day stay, the cleaners did not service the room at all. When I asked them about it, they said that they service the rooms only at the END of a guest's stay. This means: NO cleaning of the bathroom. NO making the bed. NO replenishing the toiletries. NO emptying the garbage. NO vacuuming the room. NO ANYTHING.

3) There is visible water damage on the ceiling of room 2: peeling paint and water stains.

4) I didn't notice this until the last day, but there is a big stain on the mattress pad that looks suspiciously like BLOOD. Very nasty.

5) Property is up a short, but steep hill. Very inconvenient if you have a heavy bags. Porter service not offered at check-in, which is off site about a 1/4 mile away.

6) I called the manager of the property the next day to discuss this. She was rather dismissive and told me she could do nothing for me, but would look into my complaints. I should have complained while I was there.

“Great Weekend Get Away”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 October 2009

creaky bed, lack of water, house, hill, all handled eslsewhree, had shades - significantly lower price - maintenance - not there long enough to eval service

Block Island is a great place, and the Appleyard is adequate, as long as you know what to expect. Basically accomodations at the Appleyard are spare bedrooms, each with a bathroom. There were two things that I found to be annoying, one was an extremely sqeaky king sized bed, and the other was the complete loss of waterpressure (no water to the shower) on a couple of occasions. Both times we lost the water, it was back in about 5 minutes, not sure why this happened, but I assume there just isn't enough water pressure in the house to accomodate multiple bathrooms, etc.

The house itself was well kept, basically what you would expect of an average house. As another reviewer noted, you are walking into their front door, their living area is seperated by simple wood/fabric dividers, but guest accomodations are upstairs, so this wasn't an issue for us. The house is maybe 1/4 mile from where you arrive on the ferry, but you should know that it is up a very steep hill, which wasn't a problem for us. As far as another reviewers complaint about lack of window coverings, we didn't find this to be the case at this point. There were roman shades in the windows, which was adequate for privacy.

Reservations are handled by a 3rd party, which worked out fine for us, I suppose this could be an inconvenience if you ran into issues. We only stayed for one night, so I can't really rate the service.

I can understand the frustration of the other reviwers given the prices they paid. Columbus Day weekend, being the tail end of the season, put the price well below $100 for us, which was well worth it in our opinion. Had I spend $200/night, I would not have been satisfied. If you care about the extras, this probably isn't the place for you, but if you're just looking for a clean and convenient (as long as you don't mind climbing a hill) place to stay, this could be a great fit if you can get a decent price. I would suggest that Appleyard for long-weekend type travel, I'm not sure I would want to stay here for a full week.

“I should have heeded to the 1st review on Trip advisor”

So here are the things that went wrong

1-We had room #1 with king side bed. Check in is at the Harborside Inn, where the receptionist gave us the keys to Room #1. We open the door to room #1 and find that someone else is staying there. So we are given room #2 with a queen bed. We were told that the owner had decided to give the room to one of their friend’s who were visiting

2- No curtains on the windows, the owner friends walking on the deck had a clear view of us in our bed room.

3- At 2 occasions, we had some child barge into our room.

Now I realize why on a short notice, this was the only property on Block Island that was not booked up. I cuffed up $229 a night, but would suggest locking your doors at all times and bringing little napkins to cover the windows for some privacy.

“Worst bargain for the money!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 August 2007

At $179 per night, this place was simply not worth the money. (There are a number of lovely equally priced places. We went around to compare once we were there.) The Appleyard is neither a B&B nor an efficiency apartment but features the inconvenience of both. You must enter the accommodation through the side door and the owner's house is 'blocked off' with folding screens. We stayed in the room with 2 beds. The room was tiny and cared for poorly. Paint reeled from the ceiling, the curtain rods were loose and fell off, the carpet was tired, etc. The bathroom only has a shower (not for small children). After a full 8 days stay at the Appleyard, the cleaning staff only came (at completely unpredicatable hours) to change towels and not vacuum or change our sandy sheets (inevitable). The owners of the house smoke and at 6am the lovely aroma seeps into the room. They also have their own life, which included a very late night noisy dinner party. Block Island Reservations was unhelpful in resolving any problems and the manager on duty (I’m not sure what this means) seemed annoyed when I provided feedback (this was done as an FYI and I was very diplomatic about it). I didn’t even get the placating "I’m sorry", rather I received ‘uh huh, o.k.’ as a response.

Block Island is a lovely place, please dont ruin a good vacation by staying here.
