“New Year's at Avonlea”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2012

The Avonlea (sister in to the Blue Dory) was the only spot with a vacancy on the island when we arrived from the ferry on New Year's Eve, having made no reservations. Incredible that we lucked into the best room on the whole island, in the most welcoming inn. Michelle, the innkeeper, made us feel at home even before we walked in the door, and unexpected treats came at every turn: she set out wonderful snacks and drinks for the evening and for midnight; our room, "Amethyst", had a balcony overlooking the beach, a private entrance, and an enormous jacuzzi tub; and Michelle even lent me a travel mug to take a warm drink out in the cold night. The *only* reservation I had about the room was that it was a little cramped, but that was really only because of the huge, comfy bed. We didn't need a lot of extra space anyway, because we spent all our time on the balcony, in the parlor downstairs, or out exploring the island. The high season room rate would probably be out of my budget, but for an off-season getaway it was an affordable and pretty much perfect experience. I'll definitely head back to the Amethyst room in the Avonlea next time I'm on island.

Room Tip: There are only a handful of rooms in the inn, and we stayed in the "Amethyst" room in the...

“Off season”

We stayed at Avelonea owned by the Blue Dory Inn. It was beautiful in every way. Our room had a great view of the ocean. The Inn keeper was warm and welcoming. We checked in several hours early. We found a great place to eat lunch (Poor Mans Pub) and came back just in time to settle in. The Inn keeper made some great appetizers and fresh baked cookies. We sat by the fire and spoke with some very nice couples who were all return customers. After a few glasses of complimentary wine, we went for drinks at McGoverns and then to dinner at Eli's. All were within walking distance. I would highly recommend warm layers and walking shoes so you don't miss out on anything because of the cold. We went for long walks at the Northern lighthouse, Mohegan Bluffs and Mansion Beach. After doing a little shopping, we drove around the island and eventually watched the sunset off the edge of the island. We woke up early the next morning to watch the sun rise. The Inn keeper made an incredible breakfast: muffins, blueberry pancakes, bagles, various types of breads, cereals, hashbrowns, fresh fritatta.......We bundled up and sat on the porch. We were the onlly ones to brave the cold but it was well worth the soothing smells and sounds of the ocean. We can't wait to go back.

Room Tip: Amethyst- Ocean view, large soaking tub with jets (perfect after our cold walk)!

“Avonlea”

We have been to the Avonlea many, many times. It remains our favorite place to stay on the Island. The rooms are extremely clean and comfortable. Breakfast is is a great way to start the day on the Island, many choices and always fresh. The social time had with other guests is alot of fun. We've made many friends during breakfast and happy hour or just hanging out on the beautiful porch. Michelle is a sweet, caring Innkeeper! It's like coming home when we stay at the Avonlea.

Room Tip: All of the rooms are great, some a little larger than others. We like the two rooms you face at the...

This is the second time I've stayed at the Avonlea in the fall and it is just sublime. Fireside reading, AMAZING views, gorgeous rooms, a warm and generous staff and perfect location. I wouldn't want to stay anywhere else!
