The Avonlea (sister in to the Blue Dory) was the only spot with a vacancy on the island when we arrived from the ferry on New Year's Eve, having made no reservations. Incredible that we lucked into the best room on the whole island, in the most welcoming inn. Michelle, the innkeeper, made us feel at home even before we walked in the door, and unexpected treats came at every turn: she set out wonderful snacks and drinks for the evening and for midnight; our room, "Amethyst", had a balcony overlooking the beach, a private entrance, and an enormous jacuzzi tub; and Michelle even lent me a travel mug to take a warm drink out in the cold night. The *only* reservation I had about the room was that it was a little cramped, but that was really only because of the huge, comfy bed. We didn't need a lot of extra space anyway, because we spent all our time on the balcony, in the parlor downstairs, or out exploring the island. The high season room rate would probably be out of my budget, but for an off-season getaway it was an affordable and pretty much perfect experience. I'll definitely head back to the Amethyst room in the Avonlea next time I'm on island.
