my wife and i got to block island every year in august for our anniversary, we are in our late 20's and very active. we stay in a different place each year to explore what the island has to offer. this year we stayed at the new shoreham house, one of the oldest hotels on the island. the rates are probably the best on the island....for a reason. its basic, or as i like to say, "rustic" i.e. its one notch above camping. that being said, that does NOT make it a bad thing. we have no kids with us and spend the entire day out and about on the island, riding our bikes, hitting the beaches, shops and bars. if all you need is a place to lay your head and take a quick shower, this is perfectly acceptable. if your looking for a place to bring kids and entertain them for the day in the off chance it rains, you should look elsewhere. the bathrooms are shared amongst about 8 or 10 rooms and its basically like being in college. you squeak down the hallway with your shower gear, hoping you don't see anyone and sometimes find that the shower is occupado...no big deal. grab a drink, wait 5 minutes and try again. the hotel staff is very friendly and accomodating. we had a minor issue with the daily linen and towels being changed in a timely fashion (by 3pm) but one quick reminder to the lady at the desk and the entire staff was in the hotel checking every guest and every room, so no complaints. you don't need to bring any of your own towels or soaps, they provide a giant pile of clean and folded towels and a bath mat along with soaps, conditioners and shampoos every day. there's no a/c and the beds are kind of small so be prepared to get to know each other! there are ceiling fans that are pretty powerful but despite a good sea breeze, there is little to no ventilation in the building so it gets stuffy. if your room faces the ocean you get a beautiful sunrise view but your room goes from a sticky 75 degrees to a sweltering 85+ degrees in about 20 minutes once the sun breaks the horizon and pounds into your window. there is a great little second floor deck to sit out and watch the water street and old harbor traffic while you sip coffee, wine or beer. also, cell phones work fine on the island but this hotel does not offer free wifi and if you attempt to browse the internet on your iphone you must go through the page that pops up asking to you pay for it. the prices are $34/mo, $7/day, $3/hr or something very close. i just went outside, away from that wifi signal and used the regular 3G service just fine.
the new shoreham house is not 5 star marriott with a fitness center and lounge. its basic, classic new england style lodging that gives you a nice place to sleep and shower. if you plan on spending your day in the hotel room, you won't be happy. if you want to spend the day on the beach, explore the island and be busy and know that you have a reasonably priced place to rest your head, its perfectly fine. the building is very old and will remind many people of their grandparents' house....creaky floors, cedar wood, wallpaper and sticky doors, but so what? its a great place if you can live simple and enjoy the beauty of the island and things to do without needing the hotel staff to cater to you.
i would/will definitely go back. the rates at peak season are good, after labor day it's nearly a steal. well worth a shot for the adventurous traveler! kids younger than mid-teen (15 and up) would not do well in this hotel and there were none there during my stay. most guests were young to older couples and there were no problems with noise or courtesy.
finally, the bathrooms are very clean. don't worry.
ocean view rooms are much warmer at night due to the sunlight beaming in off the water all day
