We like to support local business and have stayed at the Inn at Reading on our frequent trips to the area for years now. The fact that they accept pets has been one of the biggest factors in choosing the Inn as well. However, our most recent stay will probably be our last.
The hotel supposedly was a nice place to stay in the 60s. It seems the Inn at Reading tries to hold onto this long-outdated reputation. The hotel is dated, overpriced for the condition of the property, and the rooms don't appear to have received updates in many years.
On our recent stay, the internet was not working, which we were told by the staff when we checked in. This is a big deal for us, and it was disappointing. There was a very old thermostat in our room which did not work all weekend, so we had no temperature control. We encountered two rude employees during our visit. (We also encountered two nice employees. Unfortunately the negative always sticks out more than the positive.) The shower curtain was dirty and mildewed. The shower head was stained with hard water and mildew. I felt dirtier taking a shower than if I hadn't. The bathroom was really not very clean otherwise either, and of course outdated. On top of that, we only had two towels. I don't think I've ever been in a hotel that only gives you two towels. The mattress was hard and uncomfortable. I've stayed in some rooms at the Inn that have better mattresses, but this one was unacceptable. The carpet and chairs looked and felt grungy. Also, this is the second time that we have stayed here when the fire alarm has gone off at odd hours and for no reason. No explanation from the staff about this. The hallways smell bad. It is just not a pleasant place to stay, and in the future we were find accommodations at one of the other area hotels.

The Inn at Reading is a traditional hotel. We have a reputation for our customer service and for going the extra mile to make our guests feel at home. We are undergoing many changes at this time. We are updating our rooms to provide our guests with a more current look, but keeping with our American Heritage Traditional look. We are updating our Internet and Cable services. It is unfortunate that all these issues occurred during your stay. The fire alarm system is a necessary part of any hotel; the false alarms were caused by guests not adhering to the Hotel's smoking policy. We have made a lot of progress this year, and as the changes move forward, we are confident that your future stay with us will be comfortable and enjoyable.
