I visited Wilkes-Barre recently for a popular concert, traveling alone, and wanted to stay somewhere away from all the hoopla. Hillard House was all that and more! I arrived well after the 2 p.m. check-in time, but owners Cecilia and Gordon provided me with their usual afternoon welcome plate of fruit, cheese, crackers and a carafe of wine - brought to my room! The next morning they gave me a walking tour map and pointed out several things I might see (many were closed, but the walk was fascinating despite the heat and humidity). But they really went out of their way with Gordon driving me to and from the concert (didn't like the idea of walking alone in the dark) and to the airport on my departure date! What service!
My room was the Rose room (there are 3 total) and was furnished in period style (early 1900s) with a canopy bed, quilts, writing desk with stationary, photographs, throw rugs, beautiful pillows and bedding. For modern amenities there was an adequate in-window air conditioner (secure 2nd floor location), sink in vanity, shower and toilet in room, small flat panel TV, fridge with complimentary water and soda, coffee maker, tea caddy, and toiletries like lotion and shampoo - just like you'd find in a 5 star hotel.
Every room is astonishing, most fixtures are original, and I was invited to use the music room with piano and fireplace or den with TV for relaxing, and breakfast was served each morning in a gorgeous dining room with chandelier! I felt more elegant just walking into each room! Cecilia's breakfasts were wonderful - fresh fruit, freshly baked muffins, gingerbread pancakes one day and an apple-cheese bread pudding the next. Both Cecilia and Gordon were on hand to serve and were pleasant conversationalists.
Wilkes-Barre isn't a large place so the inn is close enough for a walk into town - a pretty park along the river is just one block away. The only complaint would be with the town's taxi service which was very unhelpful but I had a good alternative thanks to my two gracious hosts.
