There is an emanation from the heart in genuine hospitality which cannot be described, but is immediately felt and puts the stranger at once at his ease. ~Washington Irving
A stay with Jan and Bruce at the lovely Artist's Inn and Gallery is much more than a welcome respite from everyday life--it feels like visiting with old friends. From the moment we arrived, we were warmly welcomed by both Jan and Bruce and shown the ropes--plenty of common gathering space, quiet nooks and crannies inside and out, and the ever-stocked cookie jar (with to-die-for chocolate chip raspberry cookies!). In our many travels, we have never felt so "at home." It is quite evident that the Inn is more than a living for the Garrabrandts--it is a large part of their life. Their personalities and passions are evident in everything from the decor to the artfully inspired breakfasts. It is a rare gift to be able to welcome strangers to your door with such grace and charm. Although we could easily compose a dissertation on the virtues of Jan and Bruce and The Artist's Inn, we have tried to capture our stay as follows:
The Artist's Inn is perfectly located. We tend to like to get off the beaten path when we travel. Quiet little towns with local restaurants and "hidden treasures" are our "thing." Terre Hill provides the best of both worlds--easy access to the more trodden path of the Amish tourist stops/shops (about 15 minutes away)...but the wonderful feeling of escaping the tour crowds and hustle-bustle at the end of the day. The Inn is also located within only a few minutes drive of some amazing greenhouses--ask Jan for a list as she will happily share!
Top to bottom, the Inn is the perfect place to unwind at the end of the day--and to start the day, for that matter! The gardens and porch provide a sense of calm and peace that we all-too-often miss in our everyday lives. If there hadn't been so much to see and do, we could have happily sat on the porch, sipped tea, and munched some delectable goodies and whiled away the day. Lovingly decorated with Bruce's art, antiques, and other family treasures and mementos, the Inn feels like a HOME away from home. Christmas enthusiasts, we stayed in the Kriss Kringle room and spent time wrapped in a sense of holiday spirit as we browsed the antiques, books, and "little touches" that adorn the room. Big believers in the jolly man in red, we love the Dickens quote that is painted on the wall that serves as a reminder to "keep Christmas in our hearts all the year through."
The Art Gallery:
We first encountered Bruce and his quirky art on a blistering hot day at the People's Choice Festival in Boalsburg, Pennsylvania. Since then, we have purchased a number of his books and prints and--without fail--they always generate a laugh whether displayed in our own home or given as much-loved gifts. Treat yourself to some time browsing through Bruce's art in his gallery (part of the Inn). It is the sure cure for what ails you. Puns abound and it is extra-special to have a chance for Bruce to share some of his inspiration, as well. Aside from his art, Bruce has perhaps the very best outlook on life that we have ever encountered.
If, like us, you are "grab a yogurt and run" breakfast eaters, plan to be AMAZED. Jan is a phenomenal cook and breakfast is taken to a new level (art form, perhaps!). From the homemade scones, fresh fruit, and delectable "main" to the dessert (yes! dessert for breakfast--how cool is that!?), it is a real treat. Served in the dining room, it is a chance to chat with fellow guests (between mouth fulls and satisfied "oohs" and "ahhs") as well as Jan and Bruce. Plenty of coffee, juice, and conversation abound. We especially like the fact that Jan purchases local produce and meats--adding to the sense of a community that looks after itself and takes care of one another.
If you seek to escape the "everyday," plan a weekend--or more--at The Artist's Inn. No doubt, you will leave feeling refreshed, rejuvenated, and feeling as if you have made some new friends in Bruce and Jan.
