“This was an unpleasant experience”

Four years ago, when my daughter and I traveled to State College for orientation, she and I stayed in the Happy Valley Moton Inn. It was OK. I was impressed with the flowers that they planted on the property. It made up for some other deficiences. Now, four years later, my daughter was graduating and so my husband and I decided to stay at the Happy Valley Motor Inn again. The experience was awful. I will never stay here again. It is a family run motel, so I can forgive the worn carpets and the small rooms and the creaking plywood hallway leading to the upstairs rooms. But there is no excuse for the hallways floors and stairs to be littered with debris and for the bathroom to be actively growing mold on every wall. That is pure laziness on the part of both the cleaning people and the manager who supervises them. I passed a very sleepless night with the downstairs outer door banging as guests entered and left.

“Demolish This Hotel”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 October 2010

This hotel preys upon people new to Penn State who make reservations last minute. If it weren't for people like us, this place would close due to lack of business. Where do I start? We opened the door to our room and were almost knocked over due to the mold/musty spell that permeated the room. Before you step into the room you can see stains all over the carpet. These were not small stains, they were a good five or six inches in diameter. There were also many smaller stains.

The next item you get to is the refrigerator. Our fridge had mold growing all around the seals. Pretty disgusting. If you can make it past this so far then you get to the bathroom. The grout was dirty, the linoleum floor was cracked. Not a big deal until you walked on it. So soft it felt like a sponge. Must have been rotting underneath with mold growing? The toilet was cracked out by the flush handle. Bugs were in the bath light. Shower curtain rod was covered in rust. The bathroom ceiling had a hole in it that was stuffed with toilet paper. The toilet seat was so old the paint was chipping off. Wonder how they keep that clean?

The TV was old and blurry and not even worth watching.

This place was a total disaster. It's like they make the beds every day and never clean ANYTHING. I wonder if they even wash the sheets. This review seems really bad because it WAS really bad. Pictures will be attached.

We would have left in a minute but as experienced Penn Staters know, there are no rooms to be had in a 100 mile radius on football weekends. Looking back on this, I will sleep in my car at Wal-Mart next time before I sleep in this PIGSTY. We filed a complaint with the health department after we returned home so if you go into room #44 and don't find these problems, they were fixed. God only knows what all the other rooms look like.

With the advent of good camera phones and sites like trip advisor, places like this need to be exposed for what they are - trash dumps that bilk people out of hard earned money. I would classify this place as a health hazard.........

“Budget Lodgings for PSU Football”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 September 2010

First off, this just isn't a modern motel. But it is budget accomodations. We paid as much here for an entire PSU football weekend as we would have paid for one night at many of the other establishments in State College. My expectations were not high when I read the review, but the place was reasonably clean and the shower and bathroom worked just fine. You won't get the fancy soaps and shmapoos here, but it was acceptable. High speed internet is now FREE. For the most part it worked quite well, except on Sunday morning when it was very, very slow (I expect there was an update to the system happening). The staff was friendly--offering us free local newspapers and doughnuts in the morning. One caveat--if you are there on a football weekend, as we were, there are some folks who do continue their tailgating to past midnight in the small courtyard. it did not bother me but did bother my wife. But that can happen anywhere in State College on a game weekend. Parking is somewhat limited (though we did find a spot both nights) due to the popular Italian restaurtant next door (which was quite good, BTW). If you are not expecting a 5 star experience and remember that this is a 50's era motel, you will do ok. You get what you pay for. We will consider staying there again.

“I'd stay there again in a heart beat!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 July 2010

Happy Valley Inn is a nice, small, cozy inn. It is definitely not a 4 star hotel but for the price, who can complain? The Inn is in the process of renovating the rooms (new carpet, paint, tiles, etc) and we were lucky enough to have stayed in one of the newly refurbished room. The carpet was clean and the sheets were nicely laundered. The staff we dealt with was awesome. We had to go someplace where we could not possibly take our dog with us and she offered to watch him for us while we were away. She even let us bring our pet cockatiel provided he is in a cage in the room. If you are looking for a place just to sleep after a long day touring, this is for you !

“* High Speed Internet access...that's what it says on their website”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 July 2010

Well, turns out the Internet access costs $10 a day through a third-party vendor. AND...the real kicker? I'm standing outside of my room with my laptop on the trunk of my car because I cannot get the signal in my room, which is literally 30 feet from the antenna.

When I asked the manager about the Internet service listed on their website (http://happyvalleymotorinn.com/amenities.php) under "Amenities," he said: "It didn't say "free." It said "Internet access available." Well, he should have said it is only available in their "* Beautiful Garden Patio and Gazebo," which is also listed under amenities.

Oh, the TV and remote (wooooo a remote!! BIG amenitie!!) are very old. The TV is a 15" TV...almost too small to see from the beds.

Did I mention anything about the smell in the room when I arrived? Oh, yeah...about that. Bring plenty of Febreeze or candles or some other scent because I'm certain you won't appreciate the smell as you walk in your room.

It's cheap. Don't expect ANYTHING!!! You may want to bring your own linens as well.
