When looking at my review consider this – over 2011 I didn’t stay 1 night at the Downtown Hampton Inn, I didn’t even stay a weekend – it wasn’t even a week – cumulatively I stayed over 100 nights as I was here working on business.
So I will admit one of my primary reasons for picking the Hampton Inn was that it is part of the Hilton Chain, but there are other options, some supposedly better- in the area so why did I choose to stay here and keep coming back?
Overall it’s a solid 3 Star Hotel –, so if you know the Brand you know what you are getting, however it also is one of the more recently built Hampton Inns– so all the amenities are new and up to date, both in the room and in the public areas. Everything – even the small things were clean, modern and well maintained. Another HUGE plus is that Parking is FREE!
Rooms are generously sized and I have stayed in all the types they have to offer, the internet is a little slow, just depends on how full it is, but unless you are wanting to stream movies it works, I was able to check email no problem
Also there is plenty of places to eat in the area that fit all budgets – from small bars all the way up to fine dining. The Hotel is in a great location, most Downtown things are easily within walking distance – Heinz Field, Baseball and Hockey are all do-able as a walk, but it’s a Healthy Walk probably around 20-30mins
But the other thing that made the difference is the staff. Staying her e as often as I did, of course I got to know the front desk, but it was the small things, like wishing me a good day when I left – no matter who early it was – or welcoming me back. Also Housekeeping was fantastic, not 1 night, did they miss anything in my room and/or forget to service it – normally when I am staying somewhere for an extended period, there is something I have to ask the front desk to deal with that HK has overlooked, so to have a 1.000 batting record over that many nights says something.
Its these kind of things that make a stay not just good – but great!
If you need a hotel with a doorman – someone to carry your luggage, several restaurants, room service etc. etc. then the Hampton inn isn’t going to work – but then again it doesn’t pretend to offer that level of service, but for what it does do, its among the very best in Pittsburgh. If you don’t need your hand holding for 100% of your stay, then you aren’t going to be disappointed.
