We stayed overnight at the Hilton Doubletree on Jan. 20th, as we were in town to attend a Penguins hockey game. We had stayed at the Marriott up the road the previous trip. We saved quite a bit on the Hilton room by checking the rates between the two chains every couple days prior to travel. I believe we paid around $118 plus tax for a suite.
This particular property has been owned by several different chains and formerly was an apartment building decades ago. The room we had, #1020, appeared to be a converted apartment. The living area/sitting area, with microwave and refrigerator, was very spacious and there quite a bit of wasted space. Despite being right downtown, it was very quiet, and the king bed was really comfortable. However, the bathroom was very small. Former customers noted that the hotel was being upgraded. Everything we encountered was fairly new and very clean. I agree with comments that the hallways are institutional, but who cares, we're not spending much time in them!
We went to the restaurant prior to the game to check out the bar. Although somewhat small, I was ecstatic to discover 6 HIGH QUALITY taps of micros, and a very knowledgeable bartender. After the game we returned and had some appetizers. The menu was somewhat eclectic, and of course, hotel priced. We loved the made-on-premise prosciutto served with mango and toast points and my husband also enjoyed the chicken liver pate.
The only negative was that they charged our room twice for valet parking 1 vehicle. My husband fortunately discovered this prior to leaving and had it corrected. We will definitely be staying here again, if the price is still so reasonable :-)
