I have stayed at this Marriott at least 10 nights in over the past 2 years, for business. The main reasons for choosing it have been proximity to my consulting client, a generous corporate discount and my preference for the Marriott rewards program. The hotel itself is generally efficient and well run. Rooms and halls have been upgraded over the last 2 years - I have always stayed in the "renovated rooms" and found them to be uniformly clean, nicely set up (computer tables, good network connections, coffee makers, etc.).
The fitness center, while small in comparison to other properties, seems to be adequate for the number of fitness oriented guests (Pittsburghers are not known for their healthy lifestyles). The restaurant and bar are ordinary and a bit pricy - but do have some decent salad and not too calorie laden entree choices). Marriott Silver elites get a coupon on arrival for a free continental breakfast buffet - which is worth taking up if you like to start the day off with a good fruit salad, etc. - as you will have trouble finding that elsewhere in Pittsburgh.
The "City Center" location name is deceptive. "Highway Center" would be more accurate as it is located on a urban Island between the Crosstown expressway and some major traffic filled streets. Not much fun to walk to, dragging a roller board on a rainy or snowy day. Its located just East of the Downtown triangle, which means its as schlep to get to anything but Steel Plaza and the Consol Arena. There is a free shuttle service that will take you around downtown - though there can be a pretty big wait at peak times. If there is a Penguin game starting or ending, don't event think about taking a taxi in or out.
I had room service once, when I arrived very late and the restaurant had closed. While the food was fine, the service was extremely slow. I would have been better off eating my emergency power bars and grabbing breakfast in the AM. Other than that, I have nothing to complain about. Its a fine hotel at the corp discount price, but if I had to pay anything close to rack rate I would say Marriott pts be damned and stay elsewhere.
Room Tip: Higher floors are quieter.
