“Tried to Get a Room, But Apparently Didn't Have Time!!”

We traveled to this area this past week while on vacation and made no plans anywhere to stay, wanted to be flexible. Had driven past this Inn on the way to New Hope, PA. Though it looked quite charming and said we would come back after we visited New Hope for the afternoon. It was quite a rainy day and we needed a place to stay the night. We called the 1740 House and just went to an answering machine, so we drove there to check to see if there were any rooms available. I went in by myself while my husband parked the car. I was greeted by the lady at a desk who was busy with her computer and asked if there were any rooms available and asked what kind of room. I asked for just a standard room and she said she had a few and I asked about them and seemed to be quite put off as they were all different, etc. So, I asked the price, location, etc. She told me of two rooms and then my husband came in to see what was going on and I told him of the rooms she offered. She also said that she didn't have time to show us the rooms as there was a group of people there in a meeting or something. She said there was also a continental breakfast included. So I asked if we could walk around and she said not to go upstairs to bother anyone. We looked around and couldn't tell much. Saw a lady and another person walking around who eventually introduced herself as the innkeeper. She also was busy, as she stated, with this group. So, we went back to the lady at the desk and asked if there was a restaurant here and she said no and we asked about where there might be some place to eat. She just started throwing her hands/arms around naming off the towns, like I knew exactly where those towns were. Needless to say, we did leave and went to New Hope and found a wonderful room at the Logan Inn. We didn't feel that we asked too much, but apparently it was and she had no time.

“Clean Quiet Hotel In A Beautiful Natural Area”

My wife and I enjoyed our 2 night stay at this quiet inn. The well appointed room is very well kept by the staff. After a day of bicycle riding it was nice to come back to the comfortable room and sit on the patio overlooking the Delaware River. If you want to just sit around and relax and read - this is a perfect place for that too.

The 1740 House is in a pleasant quiet area with a lot of outdoor things to do - walking, biking, kayaking, swimming - and it's also a short drive to New Hope, Peddlers Village in Lahaska, Doylestown, and Rices Market on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

Our stay at the 1740 House was perfect. Lumberville is quiet, quaint and relaxing. We had a a lovely and clean double room (#11) with a fantastic view of the Delaware River. In the morning we were offered a delicious breakfast, too. Holly is an excellent hostess.

“The 1740 House may have been great in 1740, but...”

We can only assume that the large number of positive reviews of the 1740 House were written by relatives of the innkeeper. We have stayed at over 50 B&Bs and found this particular inn lacking in all niceties save one - the view of the Delaware River. While the room was clean and relatively comfortable, it offered few amenities. In the shower, the trickle of water was cold, but after five minutes or so , it actually bordered on luke warm. The sitting room and "tavern," which we were encouraged to use as our own living room, were sparse and lacking in any type of warmth. The alleged tavern boasted some bottled water, some Budweiser, and a bottle or two of wine. The room seemed not to have been occupied by anyone in quite some time. The magazines and menus for local restaurants provided in the sitting room were all several years old, and, in fact, two or three of the restaurants had closed a while ago.
Please note that the sitting room-tavern area conditions were rendered irrelevant, due to the fact that they were both closed each evening by 7 PM. We were disappointed to learn this when, upon returning to the 1740 House around 8 pm after dinner, we were locked out and unable to retrieve the wine we had chilled in the tavern refrigerator, hoping to relax with a drink or two before bedtime. A call to the innkeeper (at 8PM!) was not returned.
We checked out the next day and went just a few hundred yards north on the road to the Black Bass Inn. The view of the river was identical, but everything else was in stark contrast to what we had just experienced. Yes, it did cost a bit more, but the rooms, attitude, and most of all the service, were nothing short of superior. We had an absolutely wonderful time in a fabulous place. The Black Bass Inn is one of top B&Bs we have stayed in in over 25 years of traveling. If you're going to drive all this way anyway, we enthusiastically encourage you to use a teaspoon more gas and enjoy a wonderful experience there.

“Wonderful stay, but wish the innkeeper was given some help!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 May 2010

I brought my boyfriend to the 1740 House to celebrate his recent promotion. I am a former innkeeper myself, so I always see it as a treat to stay at a B&B whenever I can. The place was so clean, I told my boyfriend we could probably eat off the floors! Really, the cleanest place ever, which we loved. The innkeeper was very kind and she gave us a nice tour and offered assistance with dinner and things to do. We loved our room (Room 16), as we had a beautiful view and the decorating was really cute and there was a lot of attention to detail made. My only real complaint is that the innkeeper needs help. She was doing breakfast on her own, which astounded me as a former innkeeper! I used to run a B&B that had 5 less rooms than this one, and we had 3 people doing breakfast and even that was crazy sometimes. I don't know how she does it, and personally, it seemed a bit unfair. I hope the owners will give her some help because this place is a gem and I'd hate to see it deteriorate.

In closing, we loved this inn, and will definitely be back!
