My wife and I were lucky to catch a cancellation to get away from our overscheduled lives and attend the New Years Eve Murder Mystery event at the Packer Mansion. We had participated in the murder mystery weekend about 10 years ago and looked forward to the change of pace and time for renewal. On learning that we had been there previously, Bob picked a mystery that we or other guests had not yet experienced. We arrived around 7p after having an excellent dinner at Moya in town. We were cheerfully greeted by Taylor who checked us in and showed us to our room.
This time we stayed in the Carriage House. The room was great, clean, with an electric fireplace for ambiance. There is a coffee/tea station in the hallway with a small refridgerator and water, making access convenient. You can park right outside the Carriage House for easy loading/unloading.
We made it to Libations in the main lounge by 8p, where Taylor and Kristen were hosting. They offered great selections and service. By 9p, we joined 9 other couples to begin the mystery in the parlor. Bob assigned roles as the context for the mystery was revealed. He seemed to have unique insight in matching personalities to roles. Everyone was engaged as the mystery began.
The next morning, coffee/tea were available by 830a when we arrived and a great breakfast was served at 9a, where we mingled with other guests and learned more about the characters. The mystery continued at 1030, loaded with interesting local history, and ended by lunchtime. We walked downtown and explored the town, had a great lunch and returned.
By 630p we dressed for dinner and met with other guests for drinks in the mansion. Pat served an excellent dinner and Kristen offered the perfect wine recommendation. As the murder mystery wrapped up after dinner, we enjoyed the surprise ending and the character development supplied by guests.
At 1130p, we gathered with our new friends to welcome in the new year and celebrate our 25 years together. At 1155p, Taylor and Kristen served a champagne toast and the guests had donned the hats and selected noise makers. As we watched the ball drop, a full celebration was underway.
The next morning, coffee/tea were available by 830a as we arrived downstairs and Pat served another wonderful breakfast. Checkout was a breeze and as we said goodbye to our new friends and hosts, we were fully relaxed, renewed, and recharged. Who knows what 2012 will bring, but this was a great way to start the new year.
We can only recommend the Harry Packer Mansion Inn as a great weekend get away and celebration destination.
