White Cliffs is fascinating and unique. Well worth a visit. A remote place with a tiny permanent population of miners who dig for opals in their own backyards and normally live underground. One coffee shop, a few galleries (art and opal jewelry), a garage, primary school for the 7 children in town, a pub and General store and that's about it. Avoid in the Summer when temperatures get above 40 degrees C (105 degrees F)
The best accommodation in White Cliffs is at PJ's Underground. Clean and comfortable. Four of us stayed in the recently completed underground 'cottage' with its own kitchen, bathroom and laundry. Only advice is to bring along good supplies of food as the General Store's range is somewhat limited and is re-supplied from Broken Hill fairly infrequently. PJ's do provide home baked bread each day but nothing else.
The competition (The Underground Motel) is older and more basic but does offer a good old fashioned three course dinner each night for their quests and others in the area who forgot to bring their own food to town.
