“A True Troglodytic Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 September 2010

What a unique experience, to sleep underground in a cave! The owners have done a fantastic job of converting their warren underground mining tunnels into a series of comfortable, cave rooms. They finished the inside walls with plaster with keeps the dust down, levelled the floors and installed skylights in some of the rooms. It is like a maze. The decor is really quite fun, because there are some displays of old things found in the mines here, and windows that link into the opal mine surrouding you, and there is a beautiful jacuzzi atrium (but wasn't functional while we were there).

There is a tour of the house and the mine included with your night's stay, which is a definite must-do. While we were there, the owners were on holiday and had a couple who were caretaking. Anyway, this couple was great! The gentleman was a history buff, and he hosted the tour very knowledgably, and his wife was very hospitable and friendly.

The breakfast was quite simple, only toast and cereal, and you were expected to wash up. Internet access is available on their computer at $3 for 10 minutes. There are no other amenities such as TVs.

One small note -- We don't think that any of the rooms have ensuites -- so they are all shared bathrooms. (I'm sure it's difficult to get plumbing into a cave). But the bathrooms are nicely done, clean, and spacious.

“Interesting town and B&B”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 March 2010

Our room was spotlessly clean and airy. We had a skylight so I didn't feel claustrophobic at all - but I don't think I would have as the walls were all brilliantly whitewashed and the whole place was airy and well lit.

We had dinner at the local sports club and enjoyed meeting and talking with some of the local people who were without exception incredibly friendly.

“What a 5 star luxury comfortable and beutiful place to stay after a long day on a hot road”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 September 2009

Wonderful place to stay supported by great owners, and all for a reasonable price.
fascinating and luxury accomodation in a lovely cool converted opal mine.
We were really welcomed to this place and it was beautiful and well organised. Everything was clean and clearly layed out and well organised. The town is a bit hard to get good food in and a bit restricted on the times available and choices. if i went again I woudl self cater or buy one of PJ's self cater packs. The kids had a great tiem and were welcomed by the hosts. It was a beautiful oasis in a harsh surround. the whitecliffs experience is very interesting with very friendly people.
Great place to visit and very interesting
Stay here as a romantic couple or a large group.
There was tea and coffee and self service available any time of the day, in a lovely kitchen.
very nice breakfast with fresh home made bread and jams

“Staying in a dugout”

White Cliffs is a fascinating place, although dining options are very limited, and this B&B is a unique experience. The work that went into converting it from an opal mine into a home and B&B is incredible (although the mine is still operating behind one of the doors and a tour is included in the room rate). Peter and Joanne have managed to introduce natural light into most of the rooms and the temperature is constant year round so it’s very pleasant indoors and the view from the roof over the desert is impressive. Breakfast with fresh baked bread and homemade jam was really good too.

“Luxury underground”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2008

If you want the experience of visiting an opal mining town and the Australian outback then you have to go to White Cliffs. THE place to stay is PJ's bed and breakfast - sleep underground in sheer luxury at a reasonable cost. It is only a 3 hour drive from Broken Hill and well worth the journey. We brought our Irish visitor there in Dec 2007 Thank you PJ for making it a memorable visit .
