“To describe this place as a dump would be kind”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 August 2011

The last time this place was renovated was when it was built in the 1800's. We ate food here and two of the party got the runs afterwards.

It truly is a shame what the owners have (not) done to this place. It truly is a dump. Popular with bikers it seems the place is about as clean as a bikers seat.

The food was very poor even for standard pub grub. The chips were burnt and re-heated. They poor dressing over your salad that could only be described as runny poo. The place is freezing (possibly because the place is full of gaps and holes!). Walk around the back and you see piles of rubbish, broken windows and rotting walls - it honestly looks like the local tip.

We saw the accommodation as we left - i'd rather sleep in the rubbish laden stream running to the side of the pub than sleep there.

Never again. Try driving onto Camden - some very nice pubs and lodges it seems and we were kicking ourselves when we passed through afterwards.

“very disappointed in staff and facilities”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2010

Staff were unfriendly, unhelpful and at times rude. We travelled with a large group having booked a private function. There was no cooling or even fans available in any room not even the dinning room. It was stifling so much so a number of people couldn’t be bothered to eat their meals, which were average. The rooms were poor to say the least: ripped or non existent fly screens; bed coverings with cigarette burns in them; I could go on. All rooms open onto the beer garden which is lively well into the night, windows open onto the main driveway. We asked if portable fans might be available and were groaned at needless to say no fans were made available. There is only one ladies shower for 12 room’s tiles are missing the general condition was dreadful. This matched the attitude of the staff behind the bar. Never again.

“Looking forward to a good time but bitterly disappointed”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 August 2009

We looked at the website for this place and it all looked good. A micro brewery, in house restaurant and heritage building. What we got was totally different. We are seasoned travelers and have an 11 year old very flexible child. We were traveling with an adult couple, friends of ours who were skydiving with us nearby. We envisaged a nice night in a cosy bistro with local beer and a warm cosy room. Nobody bothered to tell told us the restaurant wasn't open for the Friday/Saturday we were staying (no explanation). Upon returning from outside restaurants both nights the "micro brewery" was closed by 10:30 each night? For residents too? What a a waste, we were happy to kick back and spend money for another hour or so.. The rooms were cold, dirty ( stained sheets and pillows...gross), no curtains and broken windows for the breeze to blow through. The supposedly "resident only" bathrooms at the end of the courtyard were frequented by the pub customers and were not cleaned from the Friday night we arrived to the Sunday we left. The cleaners did turn up Sunday morning at 7:00am though and proceeded to sweep (loudly) the courtyard waking us up. Very disappointed after looking forward so much to it. The young owners seriously do not have a clue how to run a tourism business. Good luck lads...and good bye!

“Worth it just for the Beer”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 May 2008

The people at the George are very friendly; the food served from Thursday to Saturday is fantastic and cheap! the rooms are a little ancient but that adds to the atmosphere of this haunted pub. Highlight is the beer made on the premises, the low points is a walk to the shared bathrooms (outside) and the strange squeaking every 15 mins. from the brewery (or maybe it is the ghosts?)

  • Liked — The atmosphere and beer
  • Disliked — the communial bathroom

“Cheap & just the basics, but not too bad!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 February 2007

The King George IV Inn in Picton, NSW is a friendly, historic Inn known for 1) brewing their own beer and 2) being haunted (as per the local historian).

I don't know about the ghosts - I did hear the owner (as per the Syd Morning Herald reviewer) getting up to take a leak (he lived in the room above).

I have stayed here twice & would stay there again if I need to stay overnight in the Picton area.

It's just the basics, with a shared toilet/bathroom across the courtyard. TV, old wallpaper, heavy curtains, no fridge., no aircon Yes, it was all old but very clean. Can't complain at the price. Had a comfortable sleep.

Both times, I stayed in the family room with friends (2 singles & a double bed) which is $66 per night.

Friends of mine have stayed in the double bed single room & boy it was small! Not enough room to swing a cat! I think even if I was travelling by myself I would book the family room.

The Inn gets extremely busy at night, with all types of people but it trickles down from about 10-11pm & shuts at 12am, after which you can't get any alcohol anywhere in Picton, not that I care much but the one time my friends and I wanted a wine to wind down the night, (I wanted to try their homemade beer which I keep meaning to do) there was none!

The food is very good, nice salads, pastas, squid etc. Kids meals etc.

I have heard that the Inn has changed hands since I last stayed there. I also heard that it may get refurbished. I look forward to staying there again and to see if it has changed for the better or worse.
