“Something special”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 July 2011

Buttervilla deserves every accolade it has received. An oasis of calm, it is perfectly situated to experience the delights of South East Cornwall and all that Cornwall and Devon have to offer. Our one night stay involved a fabulous lunch at Jamie Oliver's 15 at Watergate Bay overlooking the beach and wonderful chilli crab claws in the evening at the Rod and Line Pub not far away. The tranquility of the next morning was only interrupted by birdsong and the smell of Gill's magnificent breakfast being prepared. A tour of the Rame Peninsula completed a memorable and regretfully brief stay with our charming and helpful hosts Robert and Gill. We highly recommend Buttervilla.

“Disappointing and overpriced for what is offered”

Before I start I should point out that we stayed in a number of B&Bs in Cornwall on our visit and had chosen Buttervilla because it seemed to be similar to the other B&Bs we had booked. Sadly this was not the case, perhaps I had expected too much but for £85 per night I had hoped for a comfortable, spacious and well appointed room. As has been mentioned by others the rooms are dark but we could have lived with that, our greatest disappointment was in the quality of furnishings. The decoration was poorly done, the bathroom floor was cheap lino which was badly fitted, the towels were well used and needed updating, none of the furniture matched and most of it was past its best, the mattress was very thin and there was an assortment of crockery for tea and coffee. The TV ( although described as a flatscreen) was not modern and made a whining noise, the carpets and curtains were not of a standard expected at an upmarket priced B&B. It was all very clean, no complaints there, but just needed replacing. Breakfast was fine, but if you did not go for the homemade granola and yoghurt there was little choice in the cereal department. The location is lovely but my recommendation would be that the rooms need a serious makeover! I know the owners will harp on about being an organic farm etc, but you can still be organic and offer quality accommodation. If the room had been £60 we would have been quite happy, but at £85 it is top end money for middle of the range offerings!

“Very relaxing stay in a beautiful location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 July 2011

Just returned from three wonderful nights at Buttervilla. We booked the accommodation for the end of our Cornwall holiday as we were attending a wedding nearby and were so very pleased we did. Gill and Robert are brilliant hosts and alongside the delicious breakfasts they also offered very expert advice about where to eat and places to visit. Buttervilla feels very uncommercial and highly relaxed - the views from the extensive outside green space are amazing! Thoroughly recommend for those looking for something different to large faceless hotels.

“A great place for an active holiday.”

or just relax and admire the scenery
For foodies like us, the landlady recommended always the best place to eat.
The Buttervilla as your starting point for excursions to so many places of interest is very convenient.
Our days were dramatic, outstanding, delicious and unforgettable. “Looks better on the website than in reality”

Having visited the website and read such positive reports on Tripadvisor we expected great things. We were staying as we were going to a wedding nearby and were told when booking that as it was holiday season there would be a 3 day minimum stay. We had originally wanted to book 2 nights but accepted this as we thought it would be a bit of a treat. However we were disappointed as the room really did not live up to our expectations having studied the website. The decorations were dated, the room cold (although we did warm it up with the heaters provided) and bathroom quite basic,

We were also upset when we met other guests at the wedding, none of whom who had been refused a booking for fewer than 3 nights. Plus we met other guests at Buttervilla who stayed for just one night ! In the end we left after 2 nights and were told we would have to pay for the 3 as other bookings had been turned away, which was not entirely credible as by then we were the only guests. Plus the £85 we paid per night was steep compared to a far superior B&B we had stayed at the previous night for far higher quality.

However on the positive side the hosts were very friendly, the bed comfortable and breakfast delicious. The organic credentials are obviously first class. Our advice to potential guests is that if you are looking for an authentic organic experience this is the right place for you, but if you are more after a boutique experience then give Buttervilla a miss
