We recently stayed at the Commercial Hotel during a short break in Cornwall. First Impressions were not too bad and the room we stayed in was very nice and extremely clean too. On the first evening we decided to eat at the Hotel, having been informed they have two areas for dining, a somewhat changing rooms style dining room at the front of the Hotel which we were told by the bar person was for hotel guests only, and that local drunks weren't allowed in, the other area sounded a little more pleasant, " if you prefer, you can also dine in the conservatory restaurant" ooh! that sounds great I thought, how wrong, It felt and looked like a B&Q garden centre, what a shame and myself being a Horticulturist could see instantly the incorrect selection plants. On a positive note, the food was good, although not sure about the chips? my steak was really nice, dessert lovely, although saying that, even if the food had of been of superb quality, it's still not the decor for dining within, no ambience or atmosphere, it just needs a little thought out interior design and the place could be an outright winner. The owner Paul was really nice and most helpful regarding local areas etc,in fact, he was responsible for all our amazing days out as he would recommend the best places each morning during breakfast which we both thoroughly enjoyed each day.
I would go again and stay, but would have find somewhere with a little character to dine.

This review was posted 2 months after these guests stayed with us and in my opinion gives some very mixed signals. Firstly, let me point out once again that we offer inn accommodation (not hotel) and that all areas except the bedrooms are open to the public. Consequently, our staff would certainly not specify that the Lounge dining room is for guests only. I am deeply offended that our Lounge has been described as a "somewhat changing room style dining room" as it implies a cheap, quick fix. Had this been our intention, I hardly think we would have bothered to restore an original, teak parquet floor in this room. In fact, we spent a lot of time and thought about how to mix the building's Georgian heritage with a warm comfortable dining/reception area. This room used to be a very old fashioned lounge bar that was barely used and now welcomes locals and guests for lunch and dinner on a daily basis.
Similarly, having our conservatory described as a "B&Q garden centre" was just plain insulting. Perhaps this "Horticulturist" would have served us and the world in general better by having given us the benefit of her horticultural expertise and advice, rather than spending time writing a rather unnecessarily, spiteful review TWO whole months after her stay with us! We are simple innkeepers and spent some time at local garden nurseries being advised as to what would grow well in our Conservatory. To date, we haven't killed any plants and in fact have to re-pot several! Horticulturists nil, plain old green fingers one!
On the positive side these guests seemed to like the food and the hospitality shown to them and we thank them for their comments. However, mixed signals prevail here too as you read about their "amazing days out" which they "thoroughly enjoyed" and yet they only score the location 1 out of 5!
As I have written many times before, we have nothing to hide and would ask prospective guests to go to our website and look at our photographs and read all of our other online reviews and then come and decide for yourselves. The old adage "one man's meat is another man's poison" has never been more true than when applied to this review.
